Court rules Canadian Sampson, 3 British men can sue men they say tortured them

LONDON (CP) - Bill Sampson achieved a major legal victory Thursday in his bid to hold the men he says tortured him in a Saudi prison accountable for the beatings that made him falsely confess to murder.

In a judgment Sampson's lawyer described as groundbreaking, Britain's Court of Appeal said the Canadian management consultant and three Britons should be allowed to sue the individuals who were responsible for their torture.

For Sampson, the decision came as something of a surprise and gave him hope that he may one day be able to clear his name.

"Every day that I was in prison, I used to hope that one day if - and I mean if because I did not necessarily believe that I was coming out of there alive - that if I got out, one day I would have the right to face my tormentors in a court of law, and that day has come," he said in an interview.
