Arafat Suspected to Have Leukemia - Source

RAMALLAH, West Bank (Reuters) - Palestinian President Yasser Arafat is suspected to be suffering from Leukemia, a cancer of the blood that can be fatal, a senior Palestinian official said on Thursday.

The official, close to the veteran leader, spoke to Reuters on condition of anonymity. Arafat is due to fly to Paris on Friday for medical treatment.

One of a team of doctors treating Arafat had told reporters earlier that Leukemia was not thought to be the cause of his illness.

The doctors found that Arafat had an abnormally low count of blood platelets. One cause of that could be Leukemia.

Capable woman, who could probably hold her own politically, but
I can't see groups like Hamas working with a woman.

But I do wish Arafat would take the plunge and name someone before
it't too late. It's quite likely Israel will never let him back
into the country even if he recovers, so he should just make the
most of the time he's got and get things organised for when he's
gone.
