ABC Airs Videotape of Man Making Al Qaeda Threat

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - ABC News on Thursday broadcast a videotape it obtained last week of an English-speaking man who threatens bloody new al Qaeda attacks on the United States, but the network said U.S. intelligence officials could not authenticate the man's voice.



"U.S intelligence officials say while they still cannot authenticate the voice on the tape, it has all the trademarks of an al Qaeda production," ABC News said.

ABC obtained the tape over the weekend in Pakistan, and its existence was revealed on Wednesday by Internet columnist Matt Drudge. ABC said on Wednesday that it would be "beyond irresponsible" to broadcast the tape without first authenticating it.

to watch this online but it would not play in Opera so I used Explorer. I went to the ABC site and my firewall immediately identified that 2 spyware prorams were trying to load, then about 6 popup ads opened and after all that it said I had to register for "premium service".

The English-speaking terrorists on a new al-Qaida videotape warning of a huge attack appears to be threatening the U.S. with consequences if President Bush is re-elected.

"People of America, that was the verdict, now for the sentencing: As participants and partners in the crimes of the regime, you too shall pay the price for the blood that has been spilled," the man says on the tape.

ABC News, which obtained the tape in Pakistan Friday, withheld the final 15 minutes of it from the CIA when it was submitted for analysis, the Drudge Report is reporting.

The newssite says a federal official claims the portion withheld mentioned President Bush and Vice President Cheney.

"You are guilty, guilty, guilty. You're as guilty as Bush and Cheney. You're as guilty as Rumsfeld and Ashcroft and Powell. ..," the man states in English with an American accent.

Drudge claims the FBI and CIA last night authenticated the tape, which includes a dire warning about a serious terror attack, but ABC News says officials have not authenticated it.

News reports tonight say that the CIA was not able to find a match for the voice on the tape among the voices they have collected of Al Queda. With electronic evesdropping, I am sure the CIA has a very large collection.

Did they check Rove's voice? I bet Rove was mad as hell that ABC didn't release it sooner.

For anyone who did not read "Bush's Brain" or seen the movie, here's a little bit of history. Karl Rove was running the re-election campaign for a Texas Governor. The polls were turning against Rove's candidate, and he was expected to look really bad in a debate against his challenger. However, the newspaper headlines paid little attention to the debate. Instead, the headlines were: Listening device found in Governor's campaign office. Rove had called a long-time buddy in the FBI to show him the evesdropping bug Rove had found in his own office. After the election, it was found that the bug had only be turned on for 15 minutes.

NEW YORK -- Did a new terrorist videotape mention controversial pundit Bill Maher by name? Whether it did or not, ABC News on Thursday night used a fleeting clip of Maher in its report on the tape while noting that the veiled man on the tape talks about American television shows. Maher lost his latenight show on ABC after pronouncing that the 9/11 terrorists were anything but cowards. He's now on HBO.

Man on the tape -- warning of another massive terrorist attack in the U.S. -- purports to be a member of Al Qaeda, identifies himself as American and speaks almost perfect English. The portion of the tape referring U.S. television shows wasn't played on "World." Instead, ABC News correspondent Brian Ross mentioned it in narration as a brief clip of Maher was shown. An ABC News rep couldn't immediately answer Thursday night whether Maher was mentioned by the terrorist, or whether his image was used by the news org in a generic way, and if so, why.

Alphabet's news division acquired the tape from a source in Pakistan over the weekend, paying $500 in transportation costs. ABC delayed airing any part of the tape after both the news org and the CIA were unable to confirm its authenticity. The CIA ultimately told ABC that while it still couldn't authenticate it, the tape appears to bear Al Qaeda's markings.

Some news staffers believe the Bush administration leaked the tape's existence earlier in the week as a way to put pressure on the Alphabet to air it in the final days before the election. Bush has made terrorism a chief campaign issue, saying the country won't be safe with John Kerry in the White House.
