CASSELBERRY, Fla. - The U.S. Senate race between Republican Mel Martinez and Democrat Betty Castor maintained its rough-and-tumble tone on Thursday, with Castor questioning the ethics behind her opponent's role on the board of directors a major furniture producer. The Martinez campaign called it "deplorable campaign tactics."
Castor's campaign said a subsidiary of La-Z-Boy Inc. was among the beneficiaries of $54.3 million in federal grants that was awarded by U.S. Housing and Urban Development to help refurbish assisted living facilities while Martinez served as secretary. They argued that Martinez was later rewarded with a place on La-Z-Boy's board.
"He pumped tens of millions of dollars into a grant program benefiting a corporation that later rewarded him with a seat on its board," Castor said during a campaign stop in Lakeland. "That seat came along with sweetheart stock options and corporate perks worth more money than most Floridians make in a single year."
"I think it's important for people running for the U.S. Senate to have high ethical standards and not to benefit from their public positions," Castor said.
