Schilling Cancels Appearance with Bush
Edited on Fri Oct-29-04 10:53 AM by MissMarple
http://msn.foxsports.com/story/3120326

"I am now not medically cleared to do anything until I see Doc on Sunday, so I cannot travel with President Bush," the message read.

Schilling, who contributes frequently to online fan forums, did not immediately return a call from The Associated Press.

Oops unconfirmed.

Edited on Thu Oct-28-04 07:28 PM by demwing2

Of COURSE he has the right to speak his mind. He even has the right to be wrong! I don't think any one of would suggest that he be boycotted for engaging in a little free speech.

It's the CONTENT of his speech that offends me, not the excercise thereof.

Shilling didn't ruin my high, because I don't get high from the World Series. He threatened my peace, and the future peace of my children, by using his moment of fame to sway people towards the worst president ever selected to the office.

Let me take that a step further, Shilling isn't just supporting a bad president, he's supporting a bad MAN who stole the presidency.

Fuck George W. Bush, and fuck every jackass that tells America to vote for his fascist, idiot, war mongering ass.

Shilling has the right to speak his mind, but only if he accepts the responsibility of the consequences of his actions. After all, free speech in America isn't really free. It was paid for, in advance, by the blood of patriots past and present.

Now let Mr. Shilling pay for his speech as well.

43. I think he feels stupid for not letting the Red Sox victory be the only
story. Stealing the spotlight from such a dramatic accomplishment just seems a little selfish right now here in Boston. I think that's his reason.

I really have no problem if he stumps for Shrub. Schilling is a man of convictions and he walks his own walk whether you agree with him or not, and I respect him a great deal for that. But he didn't need to make his pitch during the Red Sox love-in and turn the focus of the interview away from the team and the accomplishment that got him the interview.

That's why he backed down...IMO

100,000 Iraqi civilians dead, says study
Sarah Boseley, health editor
Friday October 29, 2004
The Guardian

About 100,000 Iraqi civilians - half of them women and children - have died in Iraq since the invasion, mostly as a result of airstrikes by coalition forces, according to the first reliable study of the death toll from Iraqi and US public health experts.

9. He made the smart decision
In spite of all this flap, I do not hate Schilling. He is a fine pitcher, a great sportsman and shows remarkable respect for the game. I'm sure he remembered that the overwhelming majority of Red Sox fans will vote for Kerry. Now if he runs for office someday, that's another matter.

17. i agree
I don't hate him either, and I hope that most of the anti-Schilling vitriol popping up on this board is election day hysteria rather than true sentiment.

That being said I wish he had stopped with "go vote."

I wrote a letter to the Boston Globe saying how disappointed I was by the endorsement... probably won't get published but here it is:

I was disappointed to hear that Redsox pitcher Curt Schilling told viewers of
"Good Morning America" to vote for Bush. And I would have been just as
disappointed had he told them to vote for Kerry.

In this polarizing, divisive political season, baseball should remain apart,
something that belongs to all Americans regardless of their political
affiliations. Save the politics for next Tuesday, today we should all come
together to celebrate the Red Sox.

Except for Yankees fans, who can go pound sand.

That last bit was supposed to be funny, don't flame me Yankees fans!

21. Good LTTE
I happen to still like Schilling. I've known about his political and religious beliefs for some time now and it doesn't really bother me. Schilling has very deep respect for the game of baseball and I suspect that he wishes he hadn't ruined the moment with a crass political endorsement. He's also a fellow grognard who happens to be part owner of a great game company and I'm not about to boycott someone because I have political differences with them.

Edited on Fri Oct-29-04 03:52 PM by 12Bravo3Papa
He may be politically to the right, and he may say stuff he later regrets, but he is a good guy.
He is deep down a stand up guy. I disagree with his politics, he disagrees with mine. But I am not going to act like a Freeper and boycott him just because of his politics. He just stuck his foot in his mouth, Its not the first time and it wont be the last. He realized that it was wrong to use his new New England god-like stature to push his politics and decide not to continue with it.

10. Schilling honored at Disney World - yesterday

Schilling honored at Disney World
By Bill Burke/ Bostonherald.com
Thursday, October 28, 2004

There’s no rest for the victorious, evidently.
Just hours after the Red Sox secured Boston’s first World Series championship in 86 years and Curt Schilling uttered the now-famous line, “I’m going to Disney World!” he found himself rolling down Main Street U.S.A. with Mickey Mouse by his side.

Following an appearance on ABC’s Good Morning America, Schilling, his wife Shonda and their four children were given a hero’s welcome at the Magic Kingdom, led by a brass band playing "Take Me Out to the Ballgame".

Fans lined the street as the Schilling motorcade, led by the gritty right-hander atop a red convertible, zipped down the street.

“Everything was red,” said Sox fan Carol Houle, of Salem, N.H. “There were tons of Red Sox fans everywhere.”

25. My two favorite bits of that FAUX article
"While I am a Bush supporter, and I did vote for him with an absentee ballot, speaking as I did the other day was wrong. While I hope to see him re-elected, it's not my place, nor the time for me to offer up my political opinions unsolicited," the e-mail read (from Schilling).

AND

Many of the people lining up Friday morning for Bush's rally said they were more excited to see Schilling than the president. That includes Republican Congressman Jeb Bradley, who was wearing a Red Sox cap and said he hoped Schilling would sign it.

Curt admitted that he should have kept his trap shut, which was a smart thing to do after a stupid blurt. And the fact that most of the supporters were there for Curt, not Shrub, was doubly nice.

Finally, weewee screwed up at the rally. The code words "GOD BLESS YOU" were supposed to signal the confetti to be deployed. Unfortunately, weewee said it TOO EARLY, partway through his speech, to that clearly confused woman whose husband died in the WTC and she gave weewee his badge--so, weewee says the magic words to her, you heard a sound that sounded like GUNSHOTS, and confetti started coming down. He kept on with his speech anyway. A complete DISASTER in terms of staging and appearance of competence!!

The wheels are coming off the weecowboy buckboard....put the hosses back in the barn!!!!!!
