PONCA CITY, Okla. - ConocoPhillips plans to eliminate at least 40 technician jobs at its plant here by the end of 2005, union and city officials said.

Telephone messages to the Houston-based company were not immediately returned Friday.

York and other community leaders said they have heard as many as 80 full-time employees and up to 40 contract workers might lose their jobs as the plant's work is reduced or ended.

"In light of the $2 billion (third quarter) profit ConocoPhillips just announced, our members are feeling a lot of anger," York said. "They're still doing their jobs. They're doing the best they can, but at the same time, there's a lot of resentment."

Ponca City lost about 700 jobs after Conoco Inc. and Phillips Petroleum Co. merged last year.
