1. very bad news for kerry

This is extremely unfortunate news for kerry. people rally round Bush when threat level is raised or the attention turns again to iraq.

yes, the "logical analysis" would suggest it is bad for bush... people will put 2 and 2 together and question why OBL is still alive, etc. but that type of logical analysis is not what most people are going to do. that connect-the-dots thinking isn't what americans are famous for, after all. rather, they will simply see this as a terrorist and we want our daddy, bushy boy, to protect us.

Not mine. Never in a million years can I conceive of Bush as a father image. Petulant, spoiled, incompetent. No way.

I think it will remind people that Bush failed to nail Osama when he had the chance to do so.

11. The only way this is bad for Kerry
is if you ignore the logic of what the tape is saying:

That Bush lied to us and is still lying to us, failed to protect us, is trying to rob us of our freedom (like Khomeini in Iran), and that our security is up to US--by demanding as citizens a shift in our foreign policy, which any logical person would see is NOT possible under Bush. He is also saying that they want to be free, that they want their country back, which is what we want as well.

18. Only one problem...
The American people are going to look at the man who admits on tape that he arrange 9/11 and believe him?

There's a natural "oh yeah MF?" attitude that a lot of people who might have voted in OH based on economic issues, who will say "I'm supposed to believe OBL?" These people don't know what we know about *... They're not gonna like the top terrorist in the world slamming our president, no matter how bad we think he is...

Postscript: (after his comments) I think Kerry has responded well to the OBL issue. I don't think it can hurt Kerry after all. He came across as very strong on terrorism and specifically that he would kill OBL and that OBL was a barbarian who needed to be killed.

12. BU###IT!! Bush has been a miserable failure in the fight against
Al Qaeda.

This isn't 9/11 anymore, sorry pal. Americans can now see for themselves how badly Bush has F'd things up.

Kerry has been telling you ALL ALONG Bush took his eye off the ball, and this proves he was right.

If you don't think after all the times Kerry has told America that he would have gotten Bin Laden when he was trapped won't resonate...but will instead be a complicated "logical analysis" that most people won't do, you've been sniffing cave fumes too long!

Let me connect the one dot for you: Bush has FAILED.

I wonder if Bin Laden got his hands on any of that HMX......ya think?

When you evaluate the current situation, how can anyone feel safer knowing Bush is at the helm? After all he didn’t protect us the first time. He was the CEO of a corporation they would have booted his ass three years ago. Unfortunately our system is a bit slower. So I say so what UBL (if that’s who he is) sent us a message, screw’em. Vote Kerry in a give him a chance they no way in hell he could do any worse. Comment?

Bush supporters: "*grunt* Bush tough *grunt* on terror, kick bin Laden in ass now, not Kerry. Vote Bush to kick ass. *grunt*"

Kerry supporters: "Isn't this evidence that bin Laden is still at large? How does this exemplify anything but Bush's incompetence in this misguided 'War on Terror'."

Undecideds: "WTF? This is a political ploy, and it's obvious that politicians are behind the timing."

50. Not so sure about that
Bin Laden looked real winded from all that running and hiding from Bush. Looked like that was a pretty clean cave with a really nice podium. Of course, we also know what Tommy Franks told Senator Graham:
ON 2/19/02 Senator Graham met with General Franks at MacDill in Tampa. General Franks told Senator Graham "Senator we are not engaged in a war in Afghanistan. Military and Intelligence personnel are being redeployed to prepare for an action in Iraq." The Predators are being relocated. What we are doing is a manhunt." Intelligence Matters, page 125.

SO you really think the American people are real happy how Bush has hunted Osama?

19. To the right wing "they hate our way of life" argument
Although "our way of life" may be rejected (possibly violently) WITHIN the middle east the flaw of this right wing argument is that MORE THAN LIKELY if we left them alone they would NOT desire to harm us for "our way of life".

Unfortunately bin laden is right on one point - this issue isn't going to be resolved by bush or kerry, but our overall foreign policy. Neither bush nor kerry will be able to stop all terrorist acts here or abroad. Neither of them are gods.

In order to stop terrorism we will need to make reforms that NEVER get talked about in the media. One thing that needs to be done is eliminate our need for oil as much as possible. That involves a whole list of things to do by its self.

We also need to adopt a foreign policy that doesn't revolve around the idea of bringing democracy at the point of a gun. We should also assist civilian populations. For example, instead of us having iraq "pay us back" with oil funds we should make sure they get those funds AND we should provide far more assistance than we have been. Iraq can not get back on its feet on the right wing BS of "paying us back".

It's like putting a 10 million dollar debt on a homeless person who has not a penny. Then, everytime he gets a job, taking his first minimum wage paycheck before (for example) he can invest it in something that will actually allow him to get back on his feet. He'll be at zero dollars for the rest of his life, and he won't ever get near the level of "paying you back". It just doesn't work.

23. La la la, Connect the Dots
It seems we are being taken for a ride. I am skeptical about not only the timing, but the way in which the story is being presented on CNN, interspersed with the "missing explosives" story and constant references to a "pre-election terrorist attack."

The tape is being analyzed as a potential trigger-inducer for an upcoming terror attack; apparently, OBL's body language may be subtly engineered to convey a message to "sleeper cells" within the U.S.

CNN is focusing less on the political angle, and more on the possibility that this is a wink and nod to terrorists.

My question is: if there is even a slight possibility that the OBL tape may contain gestures giving the green-light for the next big attack, WHY THE HELL is this video being PLASTERED INDISCRIMINATELY all over the NEWS?

Reality is stage-managed, and the producer is heavy-handed indeed.

OBL says B*sh is incompetent and lazy. He also said, "Your security is not in the hands of Kerry or Bush or Al Qaida. Your security is in your own hands. Any nation that does not attack us will not be attacked. ..... It never occurred to us that he, the commander in chief of the country, would leave 50,000 citizens in the two towers to face those horrors alone, because he thought listening to a child discussing her goats was more important." http://www.nytimes.com/2004/10/29/international/29WIRE-TRANS.html?oref=login&oref=login

55. This is just what they need
to raise the terror alert, election day becomes chaos because of right wing media hysteria over the OBL tape
election post poned? could happen, the anxious state of the country right now anyway
People freak out and don't vote
Both sides rhetoric escalates,
Rumours, sightings (staged?) of possible terrorists (Azzam the American in the country already--hokey as that is, people believe that shit)
American democratic process next week--I hesitate to speculate further but fear the worse

The saddest thing to me is that I am more afraid of my own government than the terrorists.
This government is capable of anything.

31. what I worry about, is that we "intelligent ones" can figure out that
OBL's appearance is BAD for Bush and his total incompetence. I understand that extremely well, and hell, I already voted for President Kerry. However, too many people in this country listen to the Repugs and Karl Rove and buy their crap. I am very sure the Repugs will spin this as "Osama wants John Kerry". Makes no sense, but hell, 99% of what they say makes no sense. And guess what ? X% of the populace will buy it, lock stock and barrel. I pray that percentage does not extend beyond the deluded, intelligence-challenged base that Bush will have even if he molests some little girl on national TV.

34. Kerry needs to say just a few things
Osama bin Laden is mocking the United States (he is).

Osama bin Laden is still a free man aparently with plenty of food, medical attention, and laundry facilities (he is).

George W Bush has had three years to catch Osama bin Laden and has utterly failed.

I can't see how this can work in Bush's favor.

I realize that the talking heads may be trying to stear it in Bush's favor in the first 30 minutes, but his statement isn't an endorsement of Bush or Kerry by any means, and with the right message from the DNC, Bush cannot recover from this.

53. Bin Laden misunderstands the American mind
Bin Laden uses arguments from Moore's F-911 to exemplify that Bush is incompetent(not interrupting the school girl after he heard news of Twin Towers in flames). He critisizes Bush more than Kerry, AS IF THIS WOULD HELP KERRY. What he doesn't realize is the American mind is smart enough to go against whatever an extremist mass-murderer would advocate. He is helping re-elect his nemesis.

Osama bin Laden said for the first time that he ordered the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, according to a videotape made public today, and he accused President Bush of "misleading the American people'' about the attacks.

He also said that "the reasons to repeat what happened" on 9/11 remain, according to the Web site of the Al Jazeera satellite news network, which obtained the tape.

The videotape is the first featuring the Al Qaeda leader to surface in more than a year, and it comes just four days before the American presidential elections.

In Washington, F.B.I. officials said they believed that the tape was genuine, but that they would not comment on it further until they had conducted further analysis.

OSAMA EXCERPTS
Excerpts from the video tape by Osama bin Laden that was broadcast on Al-Jazeera Friday:

"You, the American people, my message to you is about the best way to avoid a new Manhattan, about the war, its reasons and results. I tell you: security is an important element of human life and free people do not give up their security. If Bush says we hate freedom, let him tell us why we didn't attack Sweden, for example. It is known that those who hate freedom do not have dignified souls, like those of the 19 blessed ones," he said, referring to the hijackers of Sept. 11.

"We fought you because we are free people who want to regain the freedom of our nation. As you undermine our security, we undermine yours."
Bin Laden said the relationship between Bush and his father, the former president, reminded him of many Middle Eastern regimes.

"We did not find it difficult to deal with Bush and his administration because it is similar to regimes in our countries in that half of them are ruled by the military and the other half are ruled by the sons of kings and presidents. We have a long experience with them ....

72. This IS an attack on our democracy, folks.

This guy HAS to know that ANYTHING he says WILL be taken as an "attempt to influence the election". Given the timing, that CLEARLY is the purpose here. The only question, then, is "what is the anticipated result of this broadcast?".

To answer that question directly : this might as well have been pre-approved by Karl Rove's office, it plays so directly into Bush's campaign strategy. Whether it will work or not, I'm not so sure, but it clearly is Bush's strategy regardless.

Now, ask yourselves : why would bin Laden want to "influence the election" by playing into Bush's campaign strategy?

Short answer: from bin Laden's perspective, Bush is the gift that keeps on giving. He's demolishing our economy, running us into financial ruin, allowing the robber barons to rape and pillage at will, overextending the military and flat-out *handing* bin Laden and his ilk the regional war they're literally *dying* to start.

Make no mistake: this is an attack on our electoral processes, and it is designed to benefit bin Laden's cause -- *hurting the United States*. In this case, the instrument of that harm is intended to be a miserable and incompenent little man by the name of George W. Bush.

http://english.aljazeera.net/NR/exeres/23DAA5DE-7073-4F7A-9109-8C153B41A716.htm

Usama bin Ladin has appeared on Aljazeera television on Friday, threatening new attacks on the United States.

Gesturing at the camera with a finger to stress points, bin Ladin once again took responsibility for the September 11 attacks and said reasons to attack the United States remain.

He also accused US President George Bush of deceiving the American people.

"Despite the fact that we are into the fourth year after September 11, President Bush is still misleading you and hiding the real reason from you, which means that the reasons to repeat what happened remain," bin Ladin said.

In his address just four days ahead of the US presidential election, bin Ladin also said the US administration resembled "corrupt" Arab governments.

Looking healthy

Apparently sitting or standing at a table against a neutral brown background, bin Ladin wore a white head covering and white tunic under a light brown cloak.

Reading from a sheet of paper, his voice was strong and he appeared in fair health.

He accused Bush of reacting slowly to the September 11 attacks, saying: "I never thought that the supreme leader would leave 50,000 of his people in the two towers to face the terrifying events alone at the time they were in need for him."

"We decided to destroy towers in America," because "we want to regain the freedom of our nation," bin Ladin said.

Bin Ladin also said the United States considers "killing innocent people including children in Iraq" a legitimate act.

He said the United States has dropped millions of tonnes of bombs on Iraqi children, just for the sake of replacing an old agent with a new one to plunder Iraqi oil wealth.

Bin Ladin said the September 11 attacks was in response to the injustices by the United States.

End of Article.

86. key part of OBL, from Reuters
<snip>

I am surprised by you. Despite entering the fourth year after Sept. 11, Bush is still deceiving you and hiding the truth from you and therefore the reasons are still there to repeat what happened.

"God knows it did not cross our minds to attack the towers but after the situation became unbearable and we witnessed the injustice and tyranny of the American-Israeli alliance against our people in Palestine and Lebanon, I thought about it. And the events that affected me directly were that of 1982 and the events that followed -- when America allowed the Israelis to invade Lebanon, helped by the U.S. Sixth Fleet.

"In those difficult moments many emotions came over me which are hard to describe, but which produced an overwhelming feeling to reject injustice and a strong determination to punish the unjust.

"As I watched the destroyed towers in Lebanon, it occurred to me punish the unjust the same way (and) to destroy towers in America so it could taste some of what we are tasting and to stop killing our children and women.

83. Digesting what OBL video means
Edited on Fri Oct-29-04 05:25 PM by TexasDem4Kerry
It was politically motivated due to the date of release. What he was trying to accomplish on the surface appears to be to cause Americans to actually think. I am not sure how this will be taken by Americans since (at least where I live) R's don't think very deeply and D's tend to over analyze. It will play to *'s base and Kerry's also. It will also play to the young college students who are voting for a first time. They will lean more to Kerry after this. I don't think this will push one more redneck, sorry, I mean unenlightened, voter out to the polls then were already planning to. Their votes were already in *'s pocket.

The spin will go both ways. The video was worded as to appear apolitical. This will lesson some of the R's spin in a few areas.

Wow, I don't know what to think.

because Kerry already pointed out in the debates that Bush let Osama go free because of his obsession with Saddam.

If JK was President, OBL would be behind bars and 1100+ soldiers and 100,000+ Iraqis would be alive today.

There would be no "colossal mess" in Iraq and the US would be a respected country around the world.
