Two groups that support all types of stem cell research are urging voters to oppose a state initiative that would make $3 billion available for the science.
The California Nurses Association and the Center for Genetics and Society say Proposition 71 doesn't provide enough oversight of how taxpayer funds would be spent.
Nurses association President Deborah Burger said Proposition 71 would funnel taxpayer money to the same drug companies that don't make flu vaccine because it's not profitable enough.
If the nascent science does lead to cures for some of society's most devastating diseases, Burger said, the association fears the therapies produced by drug companies would be available only to the wealthy few who can afford them, and not the millions of Americans without health insurance.

Proposition 71 proponents have said these are two fringe groups uniting... Like the nurses association, the Center for Genetics and Society supports embryonic stem cell research, said Marcy Darnovsky, the center's associate executive director. But the center also fears the initiative could hurt poor women who would seek to donate their eggs for research despite the health risks. And the group believes more public oversight is needed on how the $3 billion would be spent.
