Africans: Pro-Gay U.S. Church Follows New Religion

LAGOS (Reuters) - African bishops representing a majority of the world's Anglicans said on Friday North American sections that embrace homosexuality should be seen as following a different religion.

<snip>

African bishops want their continent to become the new heartland of Anglicanism and Nigerian Primate Peter Akinola, Africa's top cleric, has said the Church of Nigeria aims to set up branches in the United State

Church leaders in Africa fear if Anglicanism fails to take a firm stance on homosexuality, its parishioners -- many of whom are traditionalists who cannot stomach the idea of gay bishops -- will desert it for evangelical churches or Islam.

Earlier this week Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo -- a born-again Christian -- backed African bishops in rejecting homosexuality and called gay tendencies "unbiblical, unnatural and definitely un-African."

2. They're in heavy denial
Some foreign priests came to Minneapolis for General Convention and stayed with local clergy. One of the priests then on our staff, an out lesbian, hosted a priest from Uganda. He claimed that there was no homosexuality in Africa. "In Africa, men love women and women love men."

I'm sure they do, and I'm equally sure that there are exceptions. :-)

3. Did you know that most of the world's Anglicans are in Africa?

I found that surprising.

Traditional Christianity is huge in Africa, South America, Asia, and growing, will greatly outnumber Americans in the near future -- I did know that. The world is changing rapidly.

6. Peter Akinola is nothing but Bull Conner in a miter
and the oher so-called African "traditionalists" (who tolerate, and in some cases practice, polygamy) are no better.

Nigeria's Archbishop Akinola was a little more heated in his criticisms, saying Bishop Robinson's appointment in August was "a satanic attack on God's church."

Nigeria's Anglicans have been among Robinson's harshest critics. "We totally reject and renounce this obnoxious attitude and behavior," the church said in a statement last month. "It is devilish and satanic. It comes directly from the pit of hell. It is an idea sponsored by Satan himself and being executed by his followers and adherents who have infiltrated the church."

"The Devil has clearly entered our church," said Archbishop Benjamin Nzimbi of Kenya, who has announced his church will have nothing to do with the Episcopal Church.

And during the buildup to the U.S. Episcopal Church’s controversial ordination of Gene Robinson as the bishop of New Hampshire, he announced, “I cannot think of how a man in his senses would be having a sexual relationship with another man. Even in the world of animals, dogs, cows, lions, we don’t hear of such things."

MORE than 30 million African Anglicans are set to form a breakaway church in the biggest schism since the Reformation prompted by a backlash against liberal attitudes to gays and lesbians in the west.

The church is taking its cue from the unlikeliest champion of family values, President Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe, who in 1993 flamboyantly but infamously branded gay people as "worse than dogs and pigs".

Nigerians clerics, who are led by the fearfully homophobic Archbishop Peter Akinola, say they are linking up with Evangelicals who not only support Mugabe, but also President George W Bush and the Republican Party in the US, Ben Mkapa in Tanzania and Sam Nujoma in Namibia, to wipe clean the "evil stain" of homosexuality from the face of Africa.

Not surprisingly, Akinola is best buddies with Nigeria's dictator--see the link for a speech by Obasanjo lavishly praising Akinola for standing up against the "unAfrican" practice of homosexuality:
