Tape's "Real News" Ignored: Bin Laden Confirmed Alive Despite Administration Statements Not Knowing, Says Former White House Strategist; Powell, Rumsfeld, Military, Pakistani Government Among The "Surprised"

WASHINGTON, Oct. 30 /U.S. Newswire/ -- The following statement on the Osama bin Laden tape was released today by former White House political strategist Bob Weiner:

<snip>

-- Rumsfeld "raised the possibility that bin Laden was dead": "We haven't caught him... We don't even know if he's alive for sure": Rumsfeld, March 16, 2004, Associated Press.

-- "We don't know if he's alive or dead. He may be in Afghanistan. He may be someplace else": Rumsfeld, March 15, 2004, Associated Press.

-- "I believe he is still alive but I can't prove that... He is not popping up on television...": Powell, September 10, 2004, Chicago Sun Times and Associated Press.

-- "It isn't clear if Osama is alive or dead. It is just my political guess that Osama bin Laden is nowhere because we have not heard anything from him in a long time, while statements from Mullah Omar and Ayman al-Zawahri occasionally keep coming": Pakistani Information Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed, Sept. 10, 2004, Associated Press.

1. Remember back in the good old days (2002)
when Bin Laden would suddenly die, then become resurected, then die again, then maybe be dead, then possibly alive, like 8 times in a day?

It was great fun!

2. They had people believing that it would impossible for him to live
without dialysis. I honestly think that this has sent them into shock.

4. And he'll remain alive exactly as long as it benefits *
for him to be alive. I've believed for a while that they knew where he was, and, as long as his continued existence was a net benefit to bu**sh**, they were happy to let him be.

bin Laden's continued existence is the main "hook" on which bu**sh** can continue to insist on "support" for his "war" on (some) terrorists.

5. Why would Bin Laden's being alive benefit Bush?
Bush should have gotten UBL back in 2002. The tape is a reminder of his biggest failure.

8. He's the "face" of 9/11, so having him still out there...
denies the American people a sense of resolution for that - which makes them still "buy into" bu**sh**'s "war" - meaning that they're willing to grant bu**sh** extraordinary leeway for "fighting" that war. While it's true that there's more to terrorism than bin Laden, it's also true that he's the terrorist most identified with that act. If he were caught or killed, many Americans would feel "it's over" - even though that might be wrong in the literal sense - terrorists will still be out there, still be seeking to harm us and others - people will be more likely to make a rational assessment of the "war on terrorism" than they are with the 9/11 emotions still unresolved. That rationality would put a brake on bu**sh**'s bullshit.

6. OBL is alive...and * thinks the JK should be held to a truce
yeah, right....JK has been hitting * hard about not getting him and now that he's alive all of sudden it's "disgraceful" to talk about it. But * can open his rallies with images of the 9/11. :eyes:
That's not only disgraceful, but disrespectful! :puke:

10. But, but....they promised they'd NEVER, ever, ....
...try to exploit 9-11 for political purposes.

7. OBL is reminding me of that dopey soap opera "Days Of Our Lives."
About once a year, I'll be around the TV when my wife watches it. There's this crook named Stefano. It seems like every time I see the show, he gets blown up and is presumed dead. About a year later, there he is, again, and he gets hammered and is presumed dead again.

It seems like this OBL soap opera is copying from the scripts of "Days."

9. Great headline...
that is the real news. I only hope the people of this country realize that's what's important: three years later he's still alive and on our TV screens--what has Bush accomplished?!? Other than a plethora of horrible things.
