AP: Chelsea Clinton enters political arena by stumping for Kerry
KISSIMMEE, Fla. - Former first daughter Chelsea Clinton, shielded from the public during her years in the White House, delivered her first political speeches Saturday as she campaigned for Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry.

The only child of former President Clinton and Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, D-N.Y., said she was "a little nervous" about making her first speech in Tampa. That was followed by an appearance in the Orlando area, and she was scheduled to speak in suburban Fort Lauderdale later Saturday.

"I'm not quite an old pro but thankfully, I come from a family of old pros, and hopefully I'll do them proud," Clinton said.

Just wait. Cons who were complaining about Cheney's daughter being brought up will now agree that adult children of politicians are fair game.

48. Include John McCain in that mix
Rush(or Big Pharma), of course, will never be forgiven, but John McCan passed on a joke of extremely poor taste. He later apologized to the President, but I wonder if he ever apologized to Hillary. Fuck him. I never bought into the McCain craze. To me, he was and is a repuke Senator from a right-to-work state. He's a four card flush.

The Dem's kids and the Repub's kids.

Remember how proud you were of the Dem's kids over the years? Chelsea's just the last of a long string of them.

Repub's kids?

Ron Reagan's okay.

The Bush spawn (including the current pretender to our White House and his siblings)? No comment.

Who has demonstrably better family values and proven parenting skills?

Huh?

26. I can cite one exception to the Pug line
I think Gerald Ford's kids were relatively low key. Though I recall his daughter was a bit of a partyer in her teens --however not to the extent of Jenna and tonic. But they were low key, and remain to be.

35. And their dad was a reasonable 'Pug,
at least compared with Reagan and the Bushies. I've met people who have met him, and say that he was a decent, normal guy. He and Carter found that they liked each other after each could cool off a little. That says a lot.

And Ford's wife, Betty was pretty cool, admitting her problem in a very public way and starting a treatment clinic. She really set a good example.

32. Democratic Daughters Tout Kerry In Tampa
TAMPA - How close is the 2004 presidential race in Florida?
So close that Democrats named Kennedy, Clinton, Gore, Kerry and Edwards campaigned Saturday in one spot in Tampa - all daughters of past and would-be presidents and vice-presidents.

Trailed by celebrity-seeking television cameras of network shows ``Inside Edition'' and ``Entertainment Tonight,'' the photogenic fivesome rallied about 300 voters at Fred Ball Park off Bayshore Boulevard.

``I first campaigned for John Kerry at age 15,'' former first daughter Caroline Kennedy told the adoring crowd. ``It was the first campaign I ever worked on that wasn't for a relative.''

Chelsea Clinton, daughter of Bill and Hillary, delivered what she and others described as her first-ever political speech. It was short, but sharp.

``I was a little nervous,'' Clinton joked. ``I'm not accustomed to public speaking. Thankfully, I have a couple of experts in the family.''

33. Good for her!

I read some interesting excerpts from an article interviewing secret service agents assigned to security detail for the First Family over the last decade.

Apparently, they really like Laura Bush, she's actually a very nice lady.

They DON'T like Hillary Clinton, they think she's a stuck-up bitch.

They seemed to like Bill Clinton, and confirmed his palpable charisma in their presence. However, their main impression was of a guy with a fire-breathing wife.

They didn't like Al Gore, considering him a bit snotty. Apparently one day he was scolding his son, and he pointed to the secret service agents and warned his son to behave or "he'd end up like one of them".

Tipper Gore they recall as one spaced-out, very medicated lady.

As for George W. Bush, they didn't seem too impressed, and they noted the unprecedented security measures taken every place he goes... apparently he is the most paranoid president, according to the secret service.

The Bush twins?? Well, you've already heard the stories about how they like to give their secret service detail the slip to sneak out to parties.

Finally, they had good things to say about Chelsea Clinton. Apparently, they liked her, and she would always be courteous to them, as long as her mother wasn't around (apparently, she was clearly intimidated in her mother's presence).

Take it for what you will, but I tend to give these guys the benefit of the doubt. They may be "secret service" but these are not the guys planning the nest armageddon... they're just the shlubs assigned to security detail for the First Family. And I think they're right about Chelsea: I figure she's one of those decent, intelligent Americans that are in such short supply these days.

44. I know that many in the DU family think Hillary can do no wrong
but I get the same impression of her (stuck up) when watching her being interviewed. It's not because she's a self assured woman (I know many self assured women who don't come off as stuck up) but there is something about how she talks and looks at the interviewer. It's like, "oh I must now speak to the little people."

BILL Clinton, on the other hand, does not come across like that.

52. Redmond, WA is a long way from D.C.

Were these secret service people your husband spoke to specifically assigned to security detail for the First Family?

I am curious about what they DID say, although I will respect their wishes not to have their statements posted publicly.

Naturally, as with ANY article I read ANYWHERE, I take it with several grains of salt. However, this article does have a ring of authenticity to it. The fact that it does not clearly serve either political party tends to enhance its credibility.

And keep in mind that these assessments have NOTHING whatsoever to do with politics, they reflect the day-to-day experiences of employees who dealt with all these people on a first-hand basis. The agents don't speak about any political issues, they simply describe their personal workaday relationships with the personalities in question.

Here is a link to the article in question. I had forgotten that it was FAR more harsh on Bush than I remembered:

39. Crowd cheers Chelsea Clinton's political debut
Edited on Sun Oct-31-04 06:13 AM by JoFerret
http://www.sptimes.com/2004/10/31/Decision2004/Crowd_cheers_Chelsea_.shtml

Just as her face grew into her parents' features, Chelsea Clinton inherited their ability to connect with a crowd.

While the other four Democratic daughters received polite applause, the crowd surged forward to embrace Chelsea on her way off the stage. They held up babies for her to kiss, and she pecked like a pro. Her signature turned campaign signs into pieces of history.

.... She brushed off talk that her mom would run for president.

"We've got to get Kerry in there first," she said.

....
"She has that charisma that her father has," said Claudette Austin, a Democratic volunteer who lives in Westchase. "It's the memory that she triggers."
