Embattled Texas Republican DeLay Running Hard
Sat Oct 30, 2004 02:57 PM ET

By Jeff Franks
HOUSTON (Reuters) - U.S. House Majority Leader Tom DeLay has coasted to easy wins in recent elections, but this year he is running hard as his once-ascendant political career has hit a rough patch.

In contrast to past campaigns, the powerful Republican from Texas is pounding the pavement of his suburban Houston district, going house to house in search of votes, and flooding local television with campaign ads.

He stunned a local high school debate club recently when he showed up unannounced at its candidates' forum and, perhaps most surprisingly, is attacking Democratic opponent Richard Morrison, a political novice given little chance of winning.

Could this be an october surprise!!!

2. Too bad he will probably be reelected.
i read ...that another Bush or another Republican president will never
have to worry about Texas as they will always have the Senate and the House at their disposal, due to redistricting that Delay orchestrated.

8. Not exactly.
First, the redistricting is being challenged in the Supreme Court.

Second, any districting is only until the next census.

Third, and this is delicious, if the Republicans screwed up by underestimating a determined voter turnout, and Democrats take the races, then it is the Republicans who will have holy hell trying to get back in.

If Tom DeLay is campaigning, then he knows he could lose. And many, many people want him to.

It really is silly to keep imagining the Republicans as super beings against whom it is impossible to fight and win. These so-called Republicans are merely fascists, and fascists fuck up.

13. not only that, delay has LOTS of enemies. he's not very well liked...
...even by members of his own party. His nickname's "the hammer." Doesn't make me feel warm and fuzzy. I'd love to see the bastard lose fair and square. I about lost it at his "...I am the government." remark.

17. That last paragraph is so RIGHT ON, thank you.
I mean, it's important not to underestimate them--they are vicious, relentless little fucks--but yes, absolutely: not supervillains. They're more "Fargo" than "Silence of the Lambs." Most criminals are.

16. That redistricting fiasco probably hurt more than helped them
A lot of the republicans in TX voted for democrats in their state elections because they knew and liked them. Taking that option away upset a lot of rural republicans. When they finally were forced to hold hearings about the issue, the overwhelming majority of the people that showed up to give their opinion were solidly against it.

I'm hoping it bites 'em all in the ass.

6. Heh heh.
Almost makes me wish I lived in Houston so he could come knock on my door.
"Why hello, Mr. DeLay. Won't you please come in. I've got a big bug for you to squash..."

4. "vitrolic campaign"??
"Also, DeLay said he is fighting against a vitriolic campaign by national Democrats to oust him."

Really, this is unprecedented. It is so unlike his fund raising and fund funneling he's done that he's amazed it can be done legally and above-board. What a little toad.

9. The Deabte club was "stunned" because he'd initially refused their invite,
and was cowed into relenting and attending last-minute due to LOTS of local pressure ("he can't even explain himself to the high-schoolers?, etc.") He's TOAST. Dry ass crumb-covered but sorta soggy in a microwave-reheated-type way toast.
