MIAMI -- Members of Cuban exile organizations that had planned to protest the presence of musicians from the island at the Latin Grammys said Tuesday that they would not protest after all.
Because musicians from Cuba are unlikely to get visas to enter the United States, there is no need to protest, said Francisco García Martínez, one of the exile leaders.
... Some Cuban exiles who oppose Fidel Castro consider the island's musicians to be representatives of Cuba's communist government. That's why the exile groups vowed to bring more than 1,000 demonstrators for the awards show.
... A smaller group of Cuban-American protesters has a permit to demonstrate across the street from the arena.
That group, estimated to be about 100 people, wants to demonstrate in support of the right of Cuban musicians to participate.
It includes Cuban-American organizations that are against the U.S. embargo of Cuba and favor dialogue with the Cuban government.
