Tampa Tribune: Number Of EPA Suits Drops Under Bush

TAMPA - At least five top enforcement officials with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency have resigned during the past three years, frustrated over what they see as the Bush administration's lax attitude toward the nation's largest polluters.
Figures released in recent weeks show the agency filed far fewer civil lawsuits against polluting industries than were brought under President Clinton's administration.

EPA officials counter that they are trying lawsuits filed previously and are issuing notices to other polluters that will face legal action if cleanups don't follow.

The environment has been an issue of contention in this year's election, although a muted one compared with war and national security.

1. I knew the EPA had become a joke when Christie Todd Whitman was tapped to

lead it in 2000. And eventhough Madam Corporation is no longer there, the agency has continued to go down hill when it comes to living up to its name.

The war on terror hasn't helped environmental causes. Though the blocking of the Energy bill pretty much stopped most of the large-scale assult that probably would have happened. EPA has a lot of rulings in the works between now and January. Expect a lot of mishchief if this administration becomes a lame duck.
