Teacher's use of "Fahrenheit 9/11" upsets some Republicans
Class film raises hackles
A Jackson High School teacher's use of Michael Moore's "Fahrenheit 9/11" in a class upsets some Republicans.

By Melissa Slager
Herald Writer

MILL CREEK - Leaders at Henry M. Jackson High School are feeling the heat after a teacher showed the controversial film "Fahrenheit 9/11" to five of her students.

Local Republicans have lodged complaints with the principal because of the movie's portrayal of President Bush. Filmmaker Michael Moore lit a national firestorm when the movie was released in June. Since then, Moore has campaigned against Bush at college campuses and other venues.

The Jackson High teacher showed the film Thursday to the small government class as part of a lesson in propaganda and politics.

Teacher Judy Baker followed district policy by first getting the principal's permission to show the R-rated film, and also requiring parent permission. One parent opted to have a student not view the movie.

1. Send some sand to the WA State Republican Party
And tell them to go pound some. Let the parents, teachers, and students decide what to see in their classroom. Weren't they for self-determination...oh I guess seeing a movie oppositional to the Chimp is an exception!

2. Why send them sand they'll just put their fucking ignorant heads in it
Hey you fucking dumb ass repubs. It's a fucking high school where the teacher is supposed to be provoking thought our of his or her students. She can so anything she wants. She can show movies bashing Kerry, Bush, Cheny and Michael Moore himself so that her students can formed their own goddam opinions like we want them to. Get out of the fucking school and slouch your tight ass back to your fucking hole.

5. Great!
The rethuglicans fear the truth, that's all. If the teacher got permission from the principal and the student's parents they really have nothing to complain about.

8. So let 'em provide a copy of FahrenHype or whatever.
And they can discuss that movie, too.

There should be no hesitation, because the truth will win out.

13. Mill Creek may be well to do but I doubt many freepers live there.
I live about 10 blocks from the high school mentioned in the story in the less affluent Silver Lake neighborhood. It's within my voting precinct. There was an unprecedented turnout at my precinct caucus.

The Repugs complaining don't even live there.

10. We didn't watch F9/11, but
as an optional activity, we were supposed to watch the movie on our own time, then read through an article refuting it, and we discussed it in class.

16. Wasn't the Repug beef about F911 that it was propaganda?
Why in the world would they object to a class teaching about propaganda to use what they themselves think of as propaganda?

18. If she followed policy and got parental permission
I don't see what the Republicans have to be "upset" about. Any "political" film is going to have a bias one way or the other. Any small government class should be free to discuss movies in a political context. They're throwing a pity party.
