Their post about Kerry in Miami is below, but I also share the feelings about not being this inspired by a presidential race since JFK. My sense is that those of us old enough to remember JFK's presidency probably feel the same. JFK had the country jumping--it looks like John Forbes Kerry will do the same. Here's the post. Enjoy!
We just got back from a Kerry rally in Miami. It's hard to find words to describe the atmosphere before and after THE MAN spoke. Thousands there. Lots of signs, many of them funny, in English and in Spanish. Crowd started early in chanting "four more days, four more days." It was at Bayfront Park, which has an enclosed, sloping, open air theater so everyone had a good view of the stage. All kinds of people seated in bleachers behind the podium. Crowd going in was orderly, all sorts of security measures, but conducted in a most friendly way by volunteers, everyone smiling, no one complaining. Lots of anglos, hispanos, Haitians, Cuban exiles (angry at Bushista for travel, money limits for relatives back on the island). Ages? From babies in strollers to grizzled veterans. Lots of young people, lots of lots of everyone. Local politicians made (very brief) opening remarks. Guess who was not there, the "Democrat" lame duck mayor of Miami, el raton Penelas. Yes, the INSECTO who refused to back Gore in the final days of the 2000 campaign and went on vacation to Spain instead. Bette Midler was the first big name. She sang a song that apparently she had written for the first Gulf War. The crowd loved her. Then came The Boss. Springsteen belted out a song about social conditions and then the famous "No Surrender." The crowd went wild. Then Kerry was introduced by The Boss. Sheer delirium for a few minutes. Kerry spoke for almost an hour. At first we were stupified, we were actually listening, after four years, to a man who can speak on almost any subject (foreign policy, national security, economics, social welfare, tax policy, environment, energy etc etc) in COMPLETE SENTENCES and make total sense. During his speech, we called my sister and told her to listen. After about 30 seconds, she asked what was happening. I told her we were in Miami at a Kerry rally, and she was delighted. She asked how far we were from him (about 50 yards, but had binocs) and she asked if he "looked presidential." I told her, "He looks very presidential," which got some smiles from people standing near us. Kerry spoke of the issues that we are all aware of already. It was the impromtu remarks that got the crowd going. At one point, someone near him yelled out "No mas Bush." So Kerry repeats it into the microphone and the crowd happily and loudly joined in "NO MAS BUSH, NO MAS BUSH." Toward the end, Kerry jibed about how Bush has complained that being president is hard work. "Well, Mr. President, I just want to let you know that I am willing and qualified to relieve you of all that hard work !" The crowd went nutso again. Also toward the end, Kerry switched into Spanish. The crowd, and we were astounded, because although he has a New England accent in Spanish too, his use of words was flawless and the sentences flowed smoothly. There was one slight grammar slipup that we caught, but it was minor. A Latin American man and his wife standing next to us remarked that Kerry spoke better Spanish than the Chimp. All in all, a most wonderful evening. I had not been that pumped up since my first awareness of a presidential race, and that was another John F. K. from Mass. back in 1960. Was not old enough to vote then, but that John inspired me, much as this John F. K. has. We are going to win this by a margin larger than most pollsters imagine.
Thanks again for the post, Charles.
