Kerry in Manchester today ( joined by Red Sox Owners!)
News - October 31, 2004

Kerry in Manchester today
By PAT GROSSMITH
Union Leader Staff

MANCHESTER —Thousands are expected to turn out today when Democratic Presidential candidate John Kerry arrives at City Hall Plaza for a “Fresh Start for America Rally,” two days before the election.

Joining Kerry at the rally will be 2004 World Series Champion Boston Red Sox owners John Henry and Tom Werner and General Manager Theo Epstein.

“Our guys will show up,” said Kerry spokesman Eric Schultz.

On Friday, Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling canceled a campaign appearance with President George Bush at the Verizon Wireless Arena because the Red Sox had not medically cleared him.

Firefighters will also be on hand serving up their firehouse chili, Democratic candidates for state and federal office will be there to fire up the crowd and there will be a live performance by three-time Grammy winner Bruce Hornsby.

11. Man, sometimes I *really* miss Boston
This last week has been a real pissah for missing Boston. Lived there for 20 years--North Shore. Been away since 1992 but still miss it like crazy!

14. I was there! KERRY WAS GREAT!
All smiles and cheers.
Probably close to 13,000 people.
I volunteered and herded folks to the areas via their ticket colors.
It was so much fun! I'm hoarse and exuberant.

Kerry On!

16. I wish I had seen you.
We waited 4 hours and were no where near the entrance 15 minutes before Kerry was to speak. Finally the kids had had enough and we sadly left. Unfortunately we (along with hundreds of others) were apparently on the wrong side of the tent for 2 hours before anyone spoke to the group, then we were on our own at the back of the line. The good news was that A LOT of people came out to support our next president. Wish we could have caught a glimpse though!

23. I was there -
Saw a DUer I'd seen at DNC party at Clery's, but didn't get the chance to connect with her - boo hoo.

Took three hours to get in and TSA was on security - had the feeling I wasn't in Kansas anymore - it was worse than at the airport. Anyone know if this is the way it is/has been everywhere? I ask especially because people were asking this while waiting. I'm just glad that we don't have to go through TSA when we vote on Tuesday.

Still everyone was fired up- Lots of free speech today...Met and spoke with a fair share of active and committed people, alongside so many others who showed up.

25. Kerry rally in Miami--Friends were there and here's what they said
Edited on Mon Nov-01-04 09:38 AM by Say_What
Their post about Kerry in Miami is below, but I also share the feelings about not being this inspired by a presidential race since JFK. My sense is that those of us old enough to remember JFK's presidency probably feel the same. JFK had the country jumping--it looks like John Forbes Kerry will do the same. Here's the post. Enjoy!

We just got back from a Kerry rally in Miami. It's hard to find words to describe the atmosphere before and after THE MAN spoke. Thousands there. Lots of signs, many of them funny, in English and in Spanish. Crowd started early in chanting "four more days, four more days."

It was at Bayfront Park, which has an enclosed, sloping, open air theater so everyone had a good view of the stage. All kinds of people seated in bleachers behind the podium. Crowd going in was orderly, all sorts of security measures, but conducted in a most friendly way by volunteers, everyone smiling, no one complaining. Lots of anglos, hispanos, Haitians, Cuban exiles (angry at Bushista for travel, money limits for relatives back on the island). Ages? From babies in strollers to grizzled veterans. Lots of young people, lots of lots of everyone.

Local politicians made (very brief) opening remarks. Guess who was not there, the "Democrat" lame duck mayor of Miami, el raton Penelas. Yes, the INSECTO who refused to back Gore in the final days of the 2000 campaign and went on vacation to Spain instead.

Bette Midler was the first big name. She sang a song that apparently she had written for the first Gulf War. The crowd loved her.

Then came The Boss. Springsteen belted out a song about social conditions and then the famous "No Surrender." The crowd went wild.

Then Kerry was introduced by The Boss. Sheer delirium for a few minutes.

Kerry spoke for almost an hour. At first we were stupified, we were actually listening, after four years, to a man who can speak on almost any subject (foreign policy, national security, economics, social welfare, tax policy, environment, energy etc etc) in COMPLETE SENTENCES and make total sense.

During his speech, we called my sister and told her to listen. After about 30 seconds, she asked what was happening. I told her we were in Miami at a Kerry rally, and she was delighted. She asked how far we were from him (about 50 yards, but had binocs) and she asked if he "looked presidential." I told her, "He looks very presidential," which got some smiles from people standing near us.

Kerry spoke of the issues that we are all aware of already. It was the impromtu remarks that got the crowd going. At one point, someone near him yelled out "No mas Bush." So Kerry repeats it into the microphone and the crowd happily and loudly joined in "NO MAS BUSH, NO MAS BUSH."

Toward the end, Kerry jibed about how Bush has complained that being president is hard work. "Well, Mr. President, I just want to let you know that I am willing and qualified to relieve you of all that hard work !" The crowd went nutso again.

Also toward the end, Kerry switched into Spanish. The crowd, and we were astounded, because although he has a New England accent in Spanish too, his use of words was flawless and the sentences flowed smoothly. There was one slight grammar slipup that we caught, but it was minor. A Latin American man and his wife standing next to us remarked that Kerry spoke better Spanish than the Chimp.

All in all, a most wonderful evening. I had not been that pumped up since my first awareness of a presidential race, and that was another John F. K. from Mass. back in 1960. Was not old enough to vote then, but that John inspired me, much as this John F. K. has.

We are going to win this by a margin larger than most pollsters imagine.

Thanks again for the post, Charles.

29. Who wouldn't have wanted to be there to hear Cuban-Americans
shouting "No mas Bush?" Extraordinary. It would be so great seeing the Cubans who support the right candidate overcome the radical right-wingers who have been riding herd on their community in Miami and surroundings for so long.

It's about time they had their own revolution and lost those creeps the Cubans on the island wanted to dethrone! Viva Cubanos Democraticos.
