Bin Laden is trying to appeal to young Arabs, experts say

CAIRO, Egypt – Osama bin Laden's new videotape clearly targets U.S. voters days before an extraordinarily tight presidential election, but it also courts another constituency: young Arabs who are frustrated and disenchanted but not committed to radical Islam.

Al-Qaeda's leader already has on his side many extremists, who made it clear in remarks posted yesterday on Islamic Web sites that they were elated to see him looking healthy and in control of the cause.

But analysts say bin Laden is trying to broaden his base and that his words were chosen for more secular young Muslims as well as Americans.

On the tape, parts of which were aired Friday by the Arabic TV network Al-Jazeera, bin Laden dropped the usual religious rhetoric and historical references in favor of plain language.

I went searching for a copy of the video and found a brief clip of it on MSNBC and guess what? The guy uses his right hand!

10. I noticed his left arm was held oddly compared to the right arm, more

at an angle to his body compared to his right arm. And he only moved the fingers of his left hand, not his left arm, in the few bits of tape I saw on TV, FWIW. He may only have limited use of his left arm as a result of an injury incurred in Afghanistan. His appearance on previous tapes, the way he carried himself and the seeming immobility of his left arm, led people to surmise he had been injured during the bombing.
