Campaigning Bush tackles tree snakes, noxious weeds(signs 41 laws Sat)
Edited on Sun Oct-31-04 05:54 PM by maddezmom
MIAMI (AFP) - US President George W. Bush (news - web sites) asks voters to "stand with me" come election day, so it seems only fair that he stand with them as they battle noxious weeds or brown tree snakes and go about canning pears.

But the president found time Saturday to sign 41 laws on everything from renaming 10 post offices to helping a Pakistani family after its patriarch was shot dead in an alleged anti-Muslim attack after the September 11, 2001 terrorist strikes.

~snip~

The president also signed the "Brown Tree Snake Control and Eradication Act of 2004," which allows the US government to set about wiping out the reptile on Guam and prevent it from reaching other parts of the United States.

And he approved the "Noxious Weed Control and Eradication Act of 2004," requiring the US Department of Agriculture to help "weed management entities to control or eradicate noxious weeds on public and private land."

4. Good news about the brown tree snakes
These snakes are awful -- come to Guam via airplanes and have eaten most of the indigenous bird population.

Now planes from Guam landing in Hawaii could bring these horrible snakes to Hawaii.

I don't know how bushie managed to stoop to the level of ecologists to sign this brown snakes eradication bill.

This is the only positive thing he's done -- and that could be because Hawaii is in the undecided list.

8. How?
That's the question. Is the cure going to be more damaging than the snake and what corporate hog did he give the contract to? I don't trust anything that bastard does.

13. this is just taking credit for the work of others
People have been fighting the brown tree snake on Guam for years. The truth is, the snake cannot be eradicated. Several species of birds are now extinct on Guam as a result of this species, although a few of them are still being preserved in captive breeding programs. Cargo arriving in Hawaii must be aggressively screened, at least twice in past years, live snakes have been interdicted.

You may rest assured that the USDA and many other groups have not been sitting on their hands all these years waiting for Dubya to give them permission to fight the brown tree snake. This is a battle of many, many year's standing.

For Dubya to take credit for fighting this snake is about on a par with Nixon taking credit for the space program. This war has been ongoing for many years before the Bushes and will be going on for many years after they are forgotten.

In answer to your question about the cure being more damaging than the snake -- About the only way the cure could be more damaging is if they had decided to remove everyone off Guam and drop a few thermonuclear bombs on it. The most vulnerable bird species were evacuated from the island years ago because they had absolutely no chance of survival there.

There is lots of material out there about this terrible invader to the island of Guam. Some of it is found here including quite a bit about the various federal programs to fight this menace:

http://www.invasivespecies.gov/profiles/bts.shtml

Note that they are finding 13,000 of these snakes per square mile. The entire ecology and society of Guam is in a state of uproar because of this invasive species.

15. Now I'm creeped out
Ick, I don't like snakes. 8 feet long??? :scared:

I still didn't see anything that said how they're going to get rid of these things. Report a snake? Isn't that kind of like reporting a fly? They do need to go, but still, I hope the solution isn't worse than the problem.

19. Pigs love snakes.
Pigs have traditionally been used to control snakes. Pigs will root for snakes and eat them. Pigs are also easier than snakes to eliminate once introduced.

The biggest problem will be the mere number of snakes and how fast their breed. Pigs can be one part of the solution but you will need more (Unless you make Guam one big Pig Farm, now it will kill the Tourist trade but the Snakes would be gone).

12. They are bad news
Especially on islands with isolated populations of unique birds and mammals. We have even had them here in S. Texas but the winter, although mild, is enough to kill them. Hawaii is a sitting duck and already in trouble from cats, dogs, pigs, goats. etc. I don't care how they eradicate them, as long as they do.

7. "Bein' Presdent is hard work"................
who says he hasn't gotten anything accomplished (other than taking our country straight to hell). He "united" both Democrats and Republicans to get these important bills pushed through before the election. My hat is off to President *. Noxious weeds and tree snakes, now there's some legislation he should be real proud of. :eyes:
