THE UNITED Nations yesterday pledged all efforts to secure the release of a Filipino diplomat threatened with execution by Taliban fighters in Afghanistan, as Malacañang clamped a news blackout on developments in the hostage drama.
As the hours ticked toward the 3:30 p.m. Wednesday deadline set by the hostage-takers for killing Angelito Nayan and two other captives, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo talked on the phone with UN Secretary General Kofi Annan and sought the help of the world body.
She announced the government was imposing "restraint on information in order to avoid controversies that could prejudice the safety of Angelito."
"We need to forge broad support for the restraint in information that we are imposing," she added.
