Poll of Mobile Phone Users Shows Kerry Favorite 57 to 26, bigger response
Edited on Mon Nov-01-04 12:20 PM by stupidgit
More Than 16,000 Respondents (More Than 6% of the Total Sample) Give Kerry 57% to Bush's 26%

Mobile phone text users, responding to a poll from Upoc Networks, and representing 98% of the nation's wireless carriers, gave Senator John Kerry a 31% lead over President George Bush for Tuesday's General Election.

Of more than a quarter million mobile text users contacted (258,046), 16,623 users responded, representing a response factor of 6.44%. The national response average for random polls is typically between 2-3%.

Final results showed: Kerry with 57%, Bush with 26%, 14% not voting and 3% "other."

Cool, I was wondering what that text message was about. I was worried that cellphone spamming was starting.

3. Any idea about age of respondents?
Are they 18+ and voters?

4. Most polls are BS
But it's hard to overlook the vast difference in the support for the candidates based on a good sized sample of people wo took the time to respond. My sentiment from months ago was that alot of Repubs are not happy with Bush but would not vote Dem, so they would stay home or write-in. And I also figured that Dems (and particulary new voters) would be of the "protest" variety and would more likely do anything they had to do to vote.

In my mind, reponding to a poll will reflect a quasi-similar trend of determination to vote. I think it reflects energy and apathy that will have an impact. If the masses are really split 50-50, then it will come down to who wants it more.

That's my take anyway...

6. This was somewhat different

Unlike, say, a CNN online poll, which is only answered by people who happen to watch CNN to begin with, this was a poll of a quarter-million cellphone members, that have got to cut a swath across the demographics.

Among those, 6% to 7% responded, about twice the national rate.

I assume they can only respond once per phone (as opposed to CNN where you could vote multiple times).

This I could take as a believable poll. Despite taking statistics in college, I have a hard time understanding how you can take a poll of 600 people and have it "accurately" represent the feelings of a nation of 280 million to within two percentage points. I just don't buy it. I think it can give you an insight into some trends, but I don't take them as gospel, and it only really makes sense if you know what questions were asked, otherwise the results can skew.

I think there's far more out there for Kerry. I don't see any Gore/Kerry people flipping over to Bush, but there's a lot of people on the Bush side moving to Kerry and a lot of people not previously involved that are making a point to vote, and if I was 18 again and watching this election, I sure wouldn't be voting for any warmongers.

7. One question
How many of the people that responded only have a mobile phone?

8. No age, but..
For clarification, this is limited to (1) text users, and (2) members of UPOC, which I guess is an online text community (I don't have text, and therefore not UPOC).

I would assume that most members are younger, in that I don't know how many older (30+) have time to waste in online cell phone text communities. But that's just my guess.

13. This almost 44-year-old
is a cell-phone-only user and responded to the text message poll. I am a power text message user, too. Don't stereotype us 'older' folks!

16. 40-ishers
Hey, I'm in my 40s too.

Not that we're not capable of doing it, just wasn't sure that a lot of us had time to be on cell phone communities, what with kids and work and everything else.

That said, we're spending an awful lot of time here, aren't we? :)

10. Jimmy Breslin has been saying this for weeks...
For some time now, he's been saying that young people who gravitate to cell phones and don't bother with land lines are the real uncounted swing vote, and they're predominantly anti-Bush! :)

15. Some of these voters are P. Diddy & Eminem fans....

...while others are Mike Moore & Daily show fans.

I've also been complaining that the cell-phone generation is not getting polled...

Liberals, for better or worse at least control the culture-I think it will make a difference this time...
