Blair backs Kerry
Nov 1 2004

TONY Blair has privately admitted that he wants Democrat John Kerry to win tomorrow's US election.

The Prime Minister has acknowledged to at least two confidantes that a Kerry win would be a 'lifeline' for his own political future.

If Kerry does triumph, the result will undoubtedly help draw the poison out of the Iraq debate in Britain in the run up to a general election It would mean Blair could focus on the future of Iraq - not the disasters of the past.

And it may also soothe fractured relations within the Labour Party.

8. I'm reminded of a song.
Damaged goods
Send them back
I can't work
I can't achieve
Send me back
Open the till
Give me the change
You said would do me good
Refund the cost
You said you're cheap but you're too much
Your kiss so sweet
Your sweat so sour
Sometimes I'm thinking that I love you
But I know it's only lust
The change will do you good
I always knew it would
You know the change will do you good
You know the change will do you good

But I'd bet the sentiments expressed are accurate. Who in their right mind doesn't want Kerry elected? Sometimes I wonder ...

Just a reminder, folks. We need to support the left-leaning party in the UK, and that means supporting Blair. The mother country stood with us, even when we were doing something really stupid, and that kind of loyalty is worth a lot to me. Besides which, the Tories suck!

just my two cents ...

19. The Labour Party will be looking for closer ties with the Democratic Party
which the Dems will oblige, but they'll always keep Blair at arms length. Blair is despised by the U.S. left and will soon be despised by the U.S. right for jumping ship onto the Kerry boat.

The best thing that can happen for the Labour Party is if they are pro-active and force out Blair.

A general election defeat for Blair would be far worse proposition, as they would be replaced by the heavily pro-republican neo-conservative Tory Party.

46. Exactly! And precisely!
What's w/ all this juvenile venom pointed at Tony Blair by DUers? He stood by his alliance w/ America no matter who was at the helm. He trusted our nation's intelligence. Wha? I'd expect him to do so.

Tony Blair is of the Labour Party. Again, that's the L-A-B-O-U-R Party who have been historically the champion of the working man in the U.K. As has the Democratic Party, here, in the States.

What? You want the Tories/Conservatives to take the helm of the U.K. again a la Margaret Thatcher?

Hello? Old Chinese proverb: Be careful what you wish for . . .

31. Hey, poodle! Who killed Dr. Kelly? STAY AWAY FROM KERRY, YOU PRICK!
Blair govt is lying - Kelly family lawyer

Posted Thu, 25 Sep 2003

British government deceit over the suicide of government weapons expert David Kelly must be revealed, particularly the "hypocrisy" of Defence Secretary Geoff Hoon, a lawyer for Kelly's family told the inquiry into his death on Thursday.

SNIP...

Kelly (59) was found dead in July, days after being named by the Ministry of Defence as the suspected source of a BBC report that the government "sexed up" a controversial dossier on Iraq and weapons of mass destruction.

SNIP...

The BBC's Andrew Gilligan said in a radio report for the "Today" programme in May that Prime Minister Tony Blair's office had embellished intelligence in a dossier published in September 2002 in a bid to bolster the case for war.

The dossier included the headline claim that Saddam Hussein could launch biological or chemical weapons within 45 minutes.

SNIP...

"This was a cynical abuse of power and deserves the strongest possible condemnation," Gompertz said.

32. Thoughts on Tony Blair.
Which might not actually be something we want. Blair hasn't handled the PR for Iraq the way that Bush has. I don't particularly like the man, but I do see him in a Colin Powell like situation. "I can do more to mediate the damage if I am on the team than if I am on the other side." The other thing is that the Labour Party is generally the more liberal political party in the UK, and there are some right wing nutjobs opposing them that would make even screw-loose zealots like Rush or Hannity stop and say, "Damn, man, lighten up."

If Blair has any sense, he will step down and allow the Labour party to run a fresh candidate, on the hopes that a new face will convince people to stick with the party itself. Because I don't think it's possible for him to win re-election the way things are right now in the UK.

35. Blair is pissed because he got used by a half-wit
Blair started out backing the US as an attempt to control W, but W outsmarted him, and Blair wound up having to either change his position-- a death knell for his career and something that wouldn't have stopped Bush anyway-- or press on.

There were some--including Blair-- who believed Bush's main purpose in Iraq was to force compliance with the inspectors. By the time Blair figured W out, he was too deep.

Smartest guy in Britain being outsmarted by the stupidest world leader since Reagan. Must really stick in his craw.

36. Why Blair secretly wants his partner in war to lose
http://www.opinion.telegraph.co.uk/opinion/main.jhtml?xml=/opinion/2004/11/01/do0101.xml&sSheet=/opinion/2004/11/01/ixopinion.html

snip>

The American pollster had an interesting message for the Labour team. It was, he said, impossible to predict the result of the American presidential contest - although he was quietly optimistic of a Democrat win. What was clear, however, he claimed, was that the Republicans' attempt to frighten the electorate into re-electing Mr Bush had failed.

This has been a Hammer House of Horror presidential election campaign. One Republican advert showed wolves looming out of a forest accompanied by the words "weakness attracts those who are waiting to do America harm". Another warned, chillingly: "Alone in the booth - why take the risk?" Even the baddie himself, Osama bin Laden, made a cameo appearance, rising like Dracula from the coffin just a few days before Hallowe'en to warn of terrifying dangers to come.

The Republican strategy has been to scare people into George W's arms - but Mr Greenberg argued that, whatever the eventual result, it had not been as successful as the Bush team had hoped, because the public saw it as a cynical attempt to exploit their sense of insecurity.

snip>

Mr Blair is trying to convince himself that they have the same sort of legacy in mind. But that is wishful thinking, and deep down the Prime Minister knows it. That is why - despite his conviction that Mr Bush would mellow in a second term - he secretly wants Mr Kerry to win tomorrow night.

I think Tony Blair, who had a great relationship with Clinton, finally has come to the realization that he's been basically used by this administration. Unfortunately for Blair, it might be too late. Cozying up to the Bushies has already taken out Spain's Partido Popular, and Blair could be next.
