'Really close' on Bin Laden-U.S. agents say they almost got Osama

Hoping for its own October surprise, the Bush administration was told in recent weeks that counterterrorism agents were "really close" to capturing Osama Bin Laden, Newsweek reported yesterday.

Agents who were trailing an Al Qaeda operative in Pakistan a few weeks ago believed they were on the verge of being led to Bin Laden's hideout, the magazine said.

"It looked like we were really close, maybe one or two people away. There was a lot of optimism around here," one U.S. official told Newsweek.

A senior intelligence official confirmed the story for the Daily News.

It's never been proven in an investigation that Bin Laden was actually the implementer or chief architect of this plan. He was just a convenient boogeyman that they like to trot out and they trotted him out quickly to give the people a person to hate in the aftermath of the disaster.
