'Really close' on Bin Laden-U.S. agents say they almost got Osama
http://www.nydailynews.com/news/politics/story/248306p-212678c.html

Hoping for its own October surprise, the Bush administration was told in recent weeks that counterterrorism agents were "really close" to capturing Osama Bin Laden, Newsweek reported yesterday.

Agents who were trailing an Al Qaeda operative in Pakistan a few weeks ago believed they were on the verge of being led to Bin Laden's hideout, the magazine said.

"It looked like we were really close, maybe one or two people away. There was a lot of optimism around here," one U.S. official told Newsweek.

A senior intelligence official confirmed the story for the Daily News.

Ball doesn't bounce into the stands and the leading runner scores the possible winning run instead of having to stop at third on the ground rule double. Hmmm. But it is the Red Sox wearing the World Series rings, isn't it? Funny how that "really close" stuff works.

20. Senior Intelligence Official--where have I heard that name before?
His name lends so much clout to everything he says. People stop what they're doing and listen. And they should, considering how he's willing to stick his neck out and risk his good name by going on the record like that. What a brave guy.

Maybe I'm thinking of Senior Advisor to the Bush campaign, who is willing to go on record and swear that Bush is doing well in their internal polls. I get confused sometimes. Their names are so similar.

34. FYI...
It's never been proven in an investigation that Bin Laden was actually the implementer or chief architect of this plan. He was just a convenient boogeyman that they like to trot out and they trotted him out quickly to give the people a person to hate in the aftermath of the disaster. Nevermind that he's our Frankenstein's monster. The chickens basically came home to roost. And besides, I read a transcript of his full videotape, and even though he's clearly a maniac, he does make some very good points. But then again Americans are too stupid and bull-headed to listen to anyone else's point of view in the world.

The Pakistani army is doing raids, etc. but are pissed when the US crosses into the country from Afghanistan. If Pakistan intel knows where Osama is, they ain't telling.
