6 News Groups Sue Ohio Elections Chief

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- Six national news organizations filed a federal lawsuit Monday seeking additional access at the polls on Election Day.

ABC, CNN, CBS, Fox News, NBC and The Associated Press sued Ohio Secretary of State Kenneth Blackwell over a policy that would prevent exit polling within 100 feet of a voting place.

The organizations have formed a consortium to collect exit-polling data.

The news organizations said the prohibition hinders their ability to gather information about the political process and violates constitutional guarantees of free speech. They contend exit-poll reporters were allowed access within 100 feet of polls in the March primary.

2. Wouldn't want those nasty exit polls contradicting the phony results from
those nice new Diebold electronic voting machines that Blackwell forced on the voters of Ohio now, would he?

Blackwell should already be in prison.

What a blatant crook he is.

3. Yikes!
Why would you not want exit polling done? Could it be because you plan to "adjust" the numbers to your liking, and it wouldn't look real good if your numbers and the exit polls were way off?

I smell a rat!

Come on, judge! Show us that you value democracy!

5. In Minnesota
a new law was passed last year that prohibits newspeople from spending more than 15 minutes inside the polls. Secretary of State Mary Kiffmeyer (who is also the head of the National SOS Assn), said it's because of concerns over "crowding", as well. Oh, sure, you know they are just SO concerned that everyone gets the chance to vote! That's why they were sending THREE TIMES the number of challengers as before. Geez, these people are committing fraud in the name of preventing fraud. Scum. We'll be SO glad to help you all clean out your offices.

6. It was good to see DuBoies on Lehrer
He was very feisty. Said this is all "smoke and mirrors" trying to cover up obvious attempts at disenfranchisement in the name of preventing fraud--which has never been that big a problem before. You can see how mad he is. Not gonna take it this time. No sir.

7. The same lawyer that wasn't very competent down in Florida??
Edited on Mon Nov-01-04 08:27 PM by LiberalFighter
I watched that guy live on C-Span or was it CNN in 2000... anyway he didn't make it clear in his presentation. Didn't know diddly about election laws or how elections are/should be conducted.

10. Yes, the same lawyer who represented Gore
Actually, Boies has had good successes in some major cases. I thought he did a good job in 2000. I think a lot of what went wrong in Florida was not his fault but that of other of Gore's advisors early in the game.

12. Yes he had successes in major cases...
but his specialty is not Election Law

I watched and watched... he wasn't that great with it

And yes, Gore's advisors were incompetent too

And yes, Lieberman was worthless in supporting Gore's campaign

8. Exit polling: isn't it ironic...?
I remember in the election of 1980, many many people were pissed off about exit polling because they said it caused people in California not to vote, because the networks were declaring Reagan the winner before the polls in Cali were even closed.

And now: the survivial of our democracy seems to hang on exit polls. :scared:

9. If they were smart
They'd save money on the law suits and simply set up a bunch of big trucks giving away free beer and twinkies 101 feet outside of the polling places and they would have more exit poll answers than they could deal with.
