GOP Sues Over Fla. County's Voter Rolls

By RACHEL LA CORTE
Associated Press Writer

MIAMI (AP) -- Republicans sued the elections supervisor in heavily Democratic Broward County on Monday, arguing she failed to update the list of voters who cast ballots early for Tuesday's election.

Republican officials said they were concerned that throngs of voters showing up Monday at early voting sites could vote again Election Day because the list sent to precincts contains only the names of people who voted early through Sunday.

"There isn't any sort of check to keep them from voting twice. There's nothing in place to alert the clerks that the person may have voted during the early voting period," said GOP attorney Hayden Dempsey.

In the lawsuit, the Republican Party of Florida sought a preliminary injunction forcing county elections supervisor Brenda Snipes to update the list of early voters. A circuit judge in Fort Lauderdale was hearing arguments in the case Monday night, but it was uncertain whether there would be a ruling.

7. That's not as contemptable as most
Edited on Mon Nov-01-04 08:23 PM by HeftyLefty
At least they're not blatantly trying to keep people from voting at all. It would be contemptible if none of the counties in Florida were updating their voter lists, and they only went after the Democratic ones.

Double voting could swing this election.

There's an article in today's Ocala Star-Banner that said 11,000 pugs and 9,600 Dems are registered to vote in both Ohio and Florida, and that at least 100 people had voted in both states in the 2000 election.

Do you disagree that the county should update their voter list to identify those that have already voted?

20. We get pissed about the lawsuits.. not just because of their nature..
but because we believe that they are tossing on these suits to DELAY the vote counts, throw the election counting into turmoil, and allow the Supreme Court to butt into State's business again.. and appoint Bush again. So.. all lawsuits started by GOP, regardless of their complaint, are bad.

22. if ANYONE double votes
they should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

but the republican party is essentially trying to intimidate thousands of voters from legitimately voting just to catch a handful of double voters. that can be sorted out later.

duh!

14. So let's see, wouldn't they have to sue ALL counties?
Federal election, federal rules, Bush v. Gore said we can't recount only certain counties, how can they challenge only certain counties?

Very nice to know. Might come in handy later.

Personally, I'm hoping for a landslide that's so big, none of this will matter. Get the whole number-crunching scoop at Laelths Election Projection.

26. Brenda Snipes is not in Jebboy's pocket. Very tough woman with a lot of
INTEGRITY. She sure is looking bad after all this mess, though. I know everyone is totally burned out, but she is looking so tired. Trust me, she will do the best job possible for Broward County. All she wants is to do her job the very best it can be done. It's the people all around her that will probably end up giving her a nervous breakdown.

And just think, practically the WHOLE WORLD is watching her county. I'd be in a padded cell by now. Uh, maybe later this week. heh
