G.O.P. in Ohio Can Challenge Voters at Polls
COLUMBUS, Ohio, Tuesday, Nov. 2 - In a day of see-sawing court rulings, a Federal appeals court ruled early Tuesday morning that the Republican Party could place thousands of people inside polling places to challenge the eligibility of voters, a blow to Democrats who argued those challengers will intimidate minority voters.

The ruling, by the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit, in Cincinnati, reversed two lower courts that had blocked the challenges just a day before. It also came as squadrons of lawyers from both parties in Ohio and other swing states from Pennsylvania to Florida to New Mexico were preparing for Election Day skirmishes that will include using arcane laws that allow challenges at the polls.

1. Stay the course, Ohioans!
The Repukes will use this power to try and delay voting as long as possible. Make sure you have cameras/video cameras to record abuses. Encourage those who have yet to vote to stay in line-maybe, as was suggested on another thread, take chairs, drinks, snacks to share with others waiting to vote.

12. I am glad I live in a small town. What a mess and GOP will
get away with it. The lawyer on TV yesterday said it was states rights vs, federal rights so it is hard to tell. Course we know Bush is for states rights if they are for him and Federal Rights if they are for him. Bush does stand for some thing. Bush.

6. Who are these people who can challenge someone's ability
to vote? Just ordinary citizens? What gives them the right to do this?

I'll probably be in jail today if someone challenges me! WhoTF are these people who can question someone standing in line?

7. Looks like the Bush* operatives finally found the right judge...
...just as they did in 2000. We expected this to happen.

- Voter turnout is the answer.

8. Sick...
How many challengers will be allowed then? One per party and presinct? So... as a member of the Mickey Mouse party, I can go and challange all cat-like people? And the green party can challenge all those that regularly eat at McDonalds? And the Revolutionary Front of Judea can challange all the members of the Judean Revolutionary Front and the Front of Revolutionary Judeans? Right...

10. In NJ, they have volunteer attorneys and law students set up to challenge
those who challenge voters and have a court open and ready to issue orders. I know, I know. It's a lot of work for a vote, but it's so worth it.

11. exactly how does one challenge someone's right to vote?
I was going to post a joke about Repukes picking out the dark-skinned people, but then I read (in the article):

"In Philadelphia, Republicans have said they plan to challenge 10,000 voters in the heavily black West Philadelphia section because of what they say are concerns of registration fraud."

and there's just nothing I can say. Fucking bastards.
