Layoffs begin today for Vought (253) aircraft workers in Stuart (FL)

For Vought Aircraft Industry workers, today just happens to be Election Day. The real significance of the day can be found on the Florida 2004 Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Notices Web site, announcing impending layoffs beginning that day.

Tolbert, of Port St. Lucie, said he started looking for another job immediately after learning in February that Vought was shuttering the Stuart facility because of a companywide consolidation to its Dallas headquarters. The decision affected 375 local employees and 1,100 in Nashville, Tenn. A complete operations shutdown was scheduled in Stuart for late 2005.

Along with Martin Memorial Health Systems and municipal government, Vought is one of the biggest employers in Martin County.
