Vandalism is sign of the times
Election tension creates mayhem for political messages

RENO--John McClintock of Carson City voted for George W. Bush four years ago.

But fed up with the war in Iraq and afraid of being drafted, McClintock, 24, said he began tearing down Bush-Cheney signs in Carson City about 10 p.m. Saturday. Nicholas Leman, a friend since elementary school, joined in the vandalism.

After destroying about six or seven signs, the spree abruptly stopped shortly after midnight when a Sonoma Street homeowner fired a warning shot, a sheriff’s report said.

The men expressed dislike for Bush but admitted Monday that vandalizing signs wasn’t the best way to show it. They hoped their actions didn’t tarnish Democratic presidential candidate U.S. Sen. John Kerry’s campaign.

“I want Kerry to win,” McClintock said, adding he didn’t know why he decided to vandalize signs. “I was just doing it to make a point with the Republicans. I wasn’t threatening anybody or stuff.”
