Poll watchers descend on Nevada
LAS VEGAS---Hundreds of thousands of people were voting in Clark County today, and hundreds of people were watching.

Democratic lawyers, Republican operatives and civil liberties groups were among those sending observers to the polls to watch for attempts to vote fraudulently, to discourage people from voting or any combination of the two.

"We're working with the (Election Protection Project), a nonpartisan effort," said Nevada American Civil Liberties Union Executive Director Gary Peck. "They're going to have lawyers deployed throughout the Las Vegas Valley on the ready if there's any reason for them to intercede on behalf of eligible voters whose right to cast a ballot is being threatened."

1. As an aside, I predict Kerry will take Nevada. Those who aren't

from Nevada, or haven't lived there for some time, don't realize what an independent thinking state it is. As long as I can remember, clear back to the late 50's, Nevada has always been a very bi-partisan state, where voters frequently cross lines. It's not unusual for Nevadans to say, vote for a Republican for governor, and for U.S. Senator, vote Democrat, as they've done with Gov. Guinn and Sen. Harry Reid. It's always been like that. They usually vote the person, not the party.

As far as this election goes, Bush barely made it in 2000. Given he's allied himself with the radical right-wing fundamentalists, I think most Nevadans, who hate the kind of people who moralize to them, will turn him out. Add in the war, the economy, and all the rest, and my old Nevada-born Dem bones tell me Bush is toast.

2. I hope you're right and I think you may very well be right
and with the changing demographics---lots of people coming in from the East Coast---the likelihood of a Kerry victory is even more so.

A good friend of mine living in Henderson is one of those helping out at the polls today.

Thanks for your encouraging post.

3. Thanks. Behind the glitz......
most people don't realize what a working-class, union town, Las Vegas really is. That's where the majority of Nevada's Dems reside, and with the tremendous growth there, it has only added to the Democratic majority.

abound in Clark County, and, yes, I have personally spoken with some of them about who they are voting and almost every one has said Kerry.

5. except for the rural parts of the state where the international
gold mining bosses run the county repug parties and have threatened the blue collar miners with the loss of their jobs if Kerry wins and he raises royalty fees for taking gold out of public lands ...

that one was the kiss of death for Kerry in rural Nevada...
