130. HE IS GOING TO HAVE HIMSELF CLONED
Outsource a factory to make fiited sheet robes and hoods for a revival of "the good old days"

And start an SS Prison guard training college.

Also high on his agenda is to prepare the 'youth of amerika" to fight an endless war.

103. I don't know if he'll bother.
He alienated large blocs of people he'd have to win over by making it difficult for African Americans to vote. If I'd waited in the cold rain for nine hours to cast a vote, and I knew he was the guy who made it difficult for me, I don't think I'd vote for him either.

Some have suggested Giuliani. That's probably more realistic.

123. Oh, he'll bother.
He will still run for governor. He's savoring the positive media coverage he's gotten over the "smooth" voting in Ohio. He's also highly motivated by the fact that he stepped aside in 1998 in favor of now-governor Bob Taft because he was told that his turn would come later. Now he feels snubbed because the Republican establishment still doesn't favor him and he faces at least two primary opponents.

78. Good one, Liberal-Veteran.
Minister of Morality. I like that. He'd be perfect.

Reminds me of the Republican politician that was friends with my parents when I was young. Made passes at my very tall and blonde mom. He later left office in the wake of a big sex scandal.

It hasn't changed since. The ones that do the morality bit the best are the ones with the de minimis application of basic decency.

The governor of AZ, Janet Napolitano, is a Democrat, they would lose a Senate Seat. If the potential replacement is a sitting senator, count on replacements coming from states with Republican governors.

44. If this is true...
... (and I'll believe it when it actually happens... we're talking about something from Drudge, after all), this could be a combination of things. Ashcroft, indeed, might be worn out from physical problems, but I wouldn't discount the possibility that Bush is going to clean house to bring in a bunch of people who are unknown quantities, and are as bad or worse than their predecessors, but don't seem as such.

And, now that Bush seems assured of a last term, he's going to start thinking about polishing his image, which has been sorely self-tarnished by the last four years. That's not to say he wants to do anything differently--I think his actions will be much, much worse--but I do think he's going to be reaching for an aura of respectability which has been tarnished by both himself and the blatant ideologues with whom he's surrounded himself. He's megalomaniacal enough that the Churchill shit may have gone to his head, and wants to retire as a "statesman."

Everything he's done to date is about image and ideology, and I don't expect him to change now. If anything, I expect that tendency to grow, but it will be less discernable and better concealed.

Promising, even. But what if * truly believes that the rapture is immanent? Who cares about how the future will remember you if the world won't last more than 3 more years?

Start with the third essay in this thread: Who Is George W. Bush?. Start with the essay entitled, "According to Tim LaHaye, the Apocalypse is now." Then read the next two, "Rise of the Righteous Army" and "With God on His Side ... By Invoking a Higher Power, Bush Sidesteps Pesky Constitutional Issues." Just a little fun bedtime reading.

LOL!

156. I think LaHaye would...
... certainly hope that Bush agreed with his views, but there's this consideration, which Dreyfuss doesn't address. Bush is, like many sociopaths, very charming when he wants to be, and wants something from somebody, and he learned, early on, how to talk to the religious right (he was, after all, his father's liaison to the religious right in the `88 campaign).

Therefore, I'm of two minds about Bush and radical religion. There are indications that he really might think God speaks through him, but there's also that nagging suspicion that he's simply very good at using people toward his own ends.

Now that he presuming to have the mandate that he didn't have the first time around (and, boy, that's a friggin' stretch, isn't it?), he might tip his hand, having now gotten what he's really wanted. If he really believes this End Times dreck, I think we'll see little indications of it in his speeches, a few coded messages to the faithful, something like that.

As of now, though, he's been extremely circumspect about revealing anything about his beliefs in something that is, well, looney-tunes.

Cheers.

159. Ultimately, I agree ...
We'll be able to tell, soon enough, whether Bush is merely PNAC's tool as opposed to CNP's messiah, but, frankly, I can't decide which would be worse. In the long run, I realize that because the entire Western world is dependent upon Middle-Eastern oil that it might actually be comforting to think of Bush as PNAC's agent in the process of securing that oil, most of the evidence I've seen indicates that Bush is really PNC's messiah. His own cousin is famous for having said that George Bush "is the religious right," and this is truly terrifying for those of us who fear a religious fundamentalist state and the necessary nationalism that must follow from it.

Thanks for the insight. I hope your doubts are well-founded.

1) He knows something (or a lot of things) that could damage Bush if it came under scrutiny. Either one of the already existing investigations, or something related to election fraud; or

2) You were wondering why Kerry was so quick to concede? Maybe this was a part of the deal.

58. Also, Powell said he would not continue as Secretary of State....
...most definitely Rumsfeld should resign or be indicted and Condi Rice, is so out of her level of competence that she should be fired. As for KKKarl Rove and Bush they are attached at the head, so the two of them will either fly or go down together. We can only hope that Bush's selections for replacements will be based less on his ambitions and insecurities and more on what is best to bring the country back together.

The story was that several cabinet members wouldn't stick around for the second term ... some (colin powell) because they were no longer interested in working for the administration or had other things to pursue, others, and ashcroft was mentioned here, because the administration felt that they would have to make some concessions for a second term.

Edited on Thu Nov-04-04 03:48 AM by Nag Champa
In my dream, we open an Embassy in North Korea and appoint John Ashcroft as the ambassador. Soon, a video leaks out of Ascroft and Kim Jong Il singing "Let the Eagle Soar" in a pyongyang ladybar. Probably just a weird dream... but maybe its a sign.

"Let the eagle soar,

Like she’s never soared before.

From rocky coast to golden shore,

Let the mighty eagle soar.

Soar with healing in her wings,

As the land beneath her sings:

'Only god, no other kings.'

This country’s far too young to die.

We’ve still got a lot of climbing to do,

And we can make it if we try.

Built by toils and struggles

God has led us through."
