Post-election poll: Americans seem hopeful
"ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) -- Americans by and large appear to be happy with the results of Tuesday's elections and are hopeful the country will be drawn together during President Bush's second term, according to a survey conducted Wednesday night.

They also expect Bush to put aside partisan agendas and lead in a bipartisan way, according to the CNN/USA Today/Gallup poll.

Just over half -- 51 percent -- of 621 American adults surveyed said they were pleased with the outcome of the presidential election; 38 percent said they were upset. ...."

Umm .. hello Mr. Journalist, isn't that the margin Bush "won" by?

54. Don't support major news networks
Thank God I live in an area where I can get Air America Radio because now, instead of listening to NBC, ABC, CBS, CNN, MSNBC and the rest of those false prophets, I just refuse to turn them on - PERIOD! I think we should do the same thing to them that we did to Sinclair. Bomabard them with emails and phone calls which promise to boycott their sponsors until they are finally FORCED to TELL THE TRUTH!

If you cannot get Air America Radio on air, then go to their website at www.airamericaradio.com. It is very satisfying for the liberal American.

7. forcing a new narrative down our throats
After this fiction of an election result, we are being cast as only all just wanting to get along now. That it's all suddenly behind us. Looking to the future. A new hopeful beginning.

What this does is erradicates the possibility of looking critically at the election results etc. without being labeled as "not hopeful", "negative", "living in the past", "out of touch"

This marginalizes dissent.

53. MEDIA WILL SPIN NEW REALITY
Watch the media spin this unity bullshit with new "polls" taken from invisible people who will swear that they want to support Bush now that he has been re-SELECTED. Soon they will convince the world that we are all Rodney Kings and that we all want to "get along." Yo won't hear anything about the division in this country or the fact that there are some of us who will NEVER support this man and his racist, warmongering, warprofiteering policies!

Shit in one hand and expect in the other, see which one fills up quicker.

How in the hell can anyone see 51% as a mandate? Unless, of course, you don't plan on acknowledging, let alone representing, the other 49%.

49% of the population doesn't exist to these people, but an omnipresent being does.

20. CNN also just confirmed "reforming the tax code" as a Bush agenda item
I don't understand why more people are not terrified and speaking out regarding this one. If Bush moves forward with a "National Sales Tax," experts have suggested the only WORKING model requires a 50-to-60 percent tax.

That means you'll pay 150-160% of the sticker price for EVERY item you buy.

You will spend more and have less. And if you are unemployed and are draining your "nest egg," look at it this way. You EARNED the money initially and paid taxes on it before it went into your bank. You've paid taxes on the interest while it's been in there.

Let's say you have an 8.25 sales tax model right now. If Bush installs a 55% model, you will pay the 8.25 you're currently paying PLUS an additional 46.75 cents on EVERY-DOLLAR-YOU-SPEND.

If the money is in your bank, post-taxes, it's no longer "income," yet it will get a 150-160% surcharge exactly as if it were. The only way to hold onto your nest egg is to NOT SPEND IT...Moving forward, you will get to KEEP only ONE HALF to ONE THIRD of what you earn.

The Bush promises about reducing the deficit? He'll start with an additional 46.75 cents off the top of every dollar in your hands. All the tough talk during the election of "my opponent has plans, and he can't pay for them...guess how he's going to do it? He's going to raise your taxes..."

I'm sure that a "National Sales Tax is much, much worse than ANYTHING Senator Kerry envisioned bringing to the table. And yet, no one's talking about it. No one's standing up and asking "what can we do to stop it?" It seems like everyone wants to just sleep peacefully until it becomes our new standard and our new way of life. Bush backed off during the election when everyone's ears went up, then he backed off, but it "never went away." He just stopped TALKING about it until November because he didn't want to hurt his chances for "re-selection."

The "Hopeful Americans" either don't see this one coming or are just not understanding its impact.

"Americans by and large appear to be happy with the results of Tuesday's elections and are hopeful the country will be drawn together during President Bush's second term"...where exactly IS this "America?"

55. It will be rice & beans time
Buy the big, industrial-size sacks of rice that you can find in Asian markets. Buy dry beans in bulk. Get a couple of air-tight canisters for each to keep the bugs out. You can drink tap water for free, unless they find a way to add to your utilities tax.

I PREDICT that people with back-yard fruit trees will see an increase in people stealing fruit from them. No kidding...people with these trees will wake up in the morning, make their cup of coffee, yawn and do the morning stretch, open the drapes and find out that some time in the middle of the night, someone jumped the fence and stripped their trees. Because NO ONE WILL BE ABLE TO AFFORD FRUIT. Apples and oranges will become "the new caviar." You'll see photos of the Bush family, gathered for a weekend of fishing in Kennebunkport, and they will all be enjoying crunchy, sweet, juicy red McIntosh apples on Junior's boat. People will see the Bush family enjoying their apples and will want one too, so they will walk the surrounding neighborhoods, making note of which yards have trees. When all trees have been stripped, you will have a vitamin C-deficient neighborhood that has worked its way in concentric circles to 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. The armed riot police will take them down, one by one, and president Bush will celebrate the moment on national TV by saying "We will be steadfast. They will not shake our resolve. And if you want my peaches, baby don't shake my tree."

I really believe that we'll see another new phenomenon. I believe we we'll see people standing in a line in the store...ANY store...inching their way up to the register, reviewing the items in their hand basket or cart, asking themselves "which of these can I live without?"

And, after mastering this discernment skill over time, it will all come down to the walk...not ride, because you will not be able to afford the gas...to the market for rice and beans once a month.

All of these markets that we have in Silicon Valley like Cosentino's and Lunardi's that target an "upscale" clientele with higher-quality fruits and vegetables, range-free chicken, hormone-free beef...they will sell only to Bush's base. There will be no reason for anyone else to set foot in the store.

56. I'm sorry, I had them the last time this issue got some serious press...
...and posted multiple links in my threads on DU, but didn't keep them.

"Googling" the subject might turn up some useful info. But what happened at the time (and this was RIGHT at the time when Junior went public, said "That sounds GREAT, we ought to look into it," and then immediately backed off...was that the arm-chair number-crunchers jumped on the story and did an analysis.

I don't remember what the initial baseline number was. The premise was based on an end to Federal income tax, being replaced by a "National Sales Tax," and the percentage MIGHT have been in the 20-30% range.

And, because you NEVER get the whole story on any of these great ideas from the Bush administration until it's too late, the analysis came back like this:

The plan would call for abolishing the FEDERAL income tax, but the STATES would still be free to collect their taxes and piggy-back them on top of the new "National" tax. The 50-60% range came from a projection, on average, of where the level would need to be set to guarantee the same income to the government. So by the time the PUBLICIZED rate of "20-30%" was scrutinized, it was revealed that the state and federal governments would LOSE money at this level. The "realistic" range would have to be 50-60%.

And like I said, I didn't save any links because I just assumed that talk of this proposal would end when president Kerry took office. Now we know the truth...one day after the election and it's back on Junior's "to do" list.

However, now that the story's back, I'm back on it...and I will publish any "rumblings" on this one...with links...as they occur. This could also take the shape of "pork barrel" politics...all kinds of "agenda items" could be added to, removed from and slapped back onto this baby before Bush rolls it out for public viewing.

23. they may be hopeful, and they may not be upset, but it's only because of
the fact that the election result was not a protracted, insane, litigious nightmare. if it had been protracted and bush managed to f^ck us out of the vote anyway, the thugs would have used that as leverage against the Democratic party for years to come.

i am completely and absolutely certain now that the vote was rigged in Florida and Ohio. the paperless touch-screen machines were doctored to deliver the results the thugs wanted, and democracy is irrevocably broken... we are now victims of the ultimately powerful corporations who will continue to grow and merge until we have a world corporate-based government that knows every last detail about us and manipulates everything to consolidate power and money to the hands of the final few.

37. Take it from the BBC, which has the ability to look from the outside in:
Wednesday night, they reported that in 2000, Bush campaigned as a moderate and turned out to be a right wing extremist. As a result, the country is more divided than ever.

Why should anybody believe this won't change in Bush's second term? Especially since he doesn't have to worry about re-election in 2008, and neither does Cheney?

As long as he has a Republican Congress, I think Bush can ram anything through easily with no worry about repercussions.

47. Sweet Jesus, make the propaganda stop already
Someone really needs to drive these worse-than-useless "news" outlets into the sea.

48. I will be glad to see the country get fucked by Bush, that is the only way
things will change. We can't do it ourselves and the other half isn't willing to change yet. Not until the country is hurting bad enough will there be a call for change.

We enough people lose their jobs and can't support their families when enough people can't get health care, when enough people have their children fighting in foreign wars of aggression, when enough people can't afford their prescription drugs, when enough people lose their social security, when enough people can't get any kind of help from their city, county, and federal governments because the treasuries are bankrupt, when enough people get thrown in jail by a fascist regime, when enough women are forced to subjugate themselves to men, when enough people have fundamentalism forced down their throats, then maybe they'll want a change. I only hope it only take the next 4 years for them to hurt bad enough.

63. Hopeful - They're right...
I hope that each and every asswipe who voted for them gets exactly what they deserve. And you all can extrapolate to find out exactly what I mean. I'm not posting anything advocating anything bad specifically. But you get my drift... There are circles of Hell reserved for those who do these kinds of things.

Every time I see one of those CNN women with the fake smile talking about Iraq as though it was just another piece of news I want to scream!

69. LOL, and listen
Read every post in this thread, and you'll see why we lost. We have no middle ground, it's our way or the highway, right?
Until we stay away from Guns, God, and Gays, we will not win. We are not the majority on these issues. We have to find the middle groud, and fight on it.

70. I'm always hopeful
I'm naive enough to always be hopeful that justice will prevail. It's just a long, slow, painful, process. I'm old enough to remember Nixon by a landslide in '72, and we know how that turned out.
I've survived Reagan and Bush 1. This pickled punk is one more speed bump on the road of life.

71. Proof That People are Clueless
If people don't realize the ugly battle which is ahead, then I guess they believe that Bush is not a ventriloquist's dummy.

The war is in our backyard now. Oh, I guess they don't believe bin Laden either.
