US 'defies Greece over Macedonia'
BBC News

The president of the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia has said the US has recognised his country simply as "Macedonia", despite Greek protests.

Branko Crvenkovski hailed a "great day" for the country, which is at odds with Greece over the name.

A US official told AFP news agency that Secretary of State Colin Powell had approved the move.

Greek Foreign Minister Petros Molyviatis said earlier he had made a formal complaint about the US move.

1. Greece needs to know it does not matter what they think
This is the beginning of a glorious 1000-year Reich. We will not be swayed by the insignificant feelings of other so-called nations.

4. OK, is it just me who got a flash of "Travels of Gulliver"?
Two countries bitching over a name. And the US so-called "diplomats" are stupid enough to put their foot in the mess. Holy f***ing s**t. This is surreal.

Why don't they call themselves, say, "North Macedonia"?

6. Why don't they call themselves
say, whatever they want to?

My country Belgium has a province called Luxembourg, next to the country with the same name. Romania has a province Moldova, next to the country Moldova.

Never heard about a Belgian or Romanian complaint to these countries ...

Greece should abandon this misplaced patriotism and start doing its part to guarantee a little stability and security for its Balkan neighbours.

It's odd to see DU'ers ridiculing this policy. Agreed, it doesn't help that it's a policy held by the * misadministration, but two wrongs don't make it right.

8. Yep, the Greek are the moronic side on this one.
But isn't "Former Yugoslavic Republic of Macedonia" a horribly sucky name? Who suggested that? Prince?

9. Greeks are correct - Slav area called Macedonia was cold war threat
But who cares

The Greeks perhaps did not vote for Bush in the US at a high enough percentage?

Only the GOP and God know the reason for the change in the US position.

:-(

12. That would be like calling Canada 'America Junior'
Americans might think that the name is fitting, but Canadians would probably tell you to "Take off, eh."
