Bush victory spurs protest in Portland

By The Associated Press

PORTLAND — Angry protesters took to the streets of Portland yesterday, calling for an end to the Iraq war and greater scrutiny of President Bush's re-election victory.

The demonstrators, who numbered more than 100, were met by police in riot gear and on horseback. At least three people were arrested, but there were no reports of injuries.

The protesters chanted, "Not our president, not our war," and sought an investigation into Bush's victory over Democrat John Kerry.

29. It lets property owners sue for loss of value due to land-use rules
In other words, if something like an urban growth boundary is preventing you from building an apartment complex on 30 acres of farmland, you can sue the city government for the value of your lost opportunity, even if it was a fantasy.

33. That's insane
So, I can buy up a few acres of cheap land out in the country and sue for the lost value of the 100-storey office building that I want to build on it?

35. Oh yes it is, and it passed with more votes than the gay marriage ban
> So, I can buy up a few acres of cheap land out in the country and sue

Only if land use laws would not have prohibited you from building it there when you or one of your family members bought the land. However, there are some restrictions. If you wanted to build a 1-story adult bookstore or 1-story strip club, you could not claim compensation if a regulation prevented you from doing so. Make sense? Anyway, you can read more about it here:

http://www.sos.state.or.us/elections/nov22004/guide/meas/m37.html

Note that the land-use regulator can forego enforcement and let you build the 100-story office building on top of a scenic mountain, instead -- and the owner will probably be liable for the increased property value at tax time, once intent is declared. This one is probably going to end up in the courts for clarification if nothing else.

39. It's a "takings" law.
Any government regulation that purportedly diminishes the value of private land can now be challenged in order for property owners to "get reimbursed" by the government. What that means, in effect, is that there will be no regulation in Oregon, as government won't have the time or money to challenge any such claims, and it won't have the money to "pay" for supposed losses. So Oregon is now a no-man's-land, where the benefits of planning have made it a wonderful place to live up until now, when we'll turn into another Arizona or California with sprawl and hideous, bankrupt non-planning. I'll stick it out for a while, but I see this as the end of Portland as we know it.

Protesters gather for post-election anti- war march

JODY ROSELLE

Journal Staff

ITHACA -- Beating bongo drums and carrying signs with antiwar messages, approximately 75 protesters marched through the city in an effort to raise awareness of the war in Iraq.

Carrying a sign saying "1 Vote=1 Day. Working for justice all year," city resident Neil Oolie said the protest had been a spontaneous plan by people gathered at the Women's Community Building to watch the election returns Tuesday.

36. I lived in Portland for two years.
At one rally (anti-war rally) I heard "lets end this now" over a police radio. The next thing I knew I saw a baby being held by his father getting peppered. My roomate at the time got pictures of this. It was fucked up, a father holding his child got sprayed with pepper while holding his kid. The Portland police are fucking animals.

45. Fortunately, we have elected a new mayor
He is also the former police commissioner. He is not nearly as jack-booted as the other asshole that we used to have as police commissioner.

I think the mayor is automatically in charge of the police bureau. I think we'll see some changes.

He's also very supportive of gay rights.

Think about it - thousands upon thousands of people protesting, just like they did before the war, just as they did in New YOrk before the GOP convention. We need MASSIVE shows of bodies that CANNOT be ignored. We need anger and we need vehemance. We need people shouting and screaming through bullhorns. We are ANGRY and we need to SHOW it instead of sitting behind our computers. SOMEBODY out there get organizing and I'll join you. FIGHT!!!!!
