Bush Emphasis on Values Drew Ohio Evangelicals

SHEFFIELD LAKE, Ohio -- Here on Redwood Drive, in the little house with the white picket fence, these first days after the election are good days, happy days, blessed days.

"Dear Lord," Cary Leslie is saying for the sixth time since waking up at 3:45 a.m. to go to work. He has prayed for strength not to hit the snooze button on the alarm clock. He has prayed for a safe day for his wife and three children. He has prayed for patience with the foul-tempered customers he deals with at the car-rental counter. He has prayed for a job that will pay enough for a struggling family of five to keep up with the bills. He has prayed for a quick resolution to the presidential election. And now, with the election decided, he is thanking God for listening to his prayers

Tara Leslie, Cary's wife, has been praying for President Bush, too, and now she is saying, "I think it's so important to have a society of moral absolutes."

"It's really good to know our country had a decision to make, and there are so many people who feel this way," Cary says. "It's a victory for people like us."

The Leslies: They are George W. Bush votes come to life. The millions of voters who describe themselves as "white evangelicals," 77 percent of whom voted for Bush? That's the Leslies. The voters who said "moral values" was the single issue that mattered most to them, 80 percent of whom voted for Bush? That's the Leslies, too.

in terms of moral absolutes scare the sh*t out of me.

It isn't the role of government to regulate moral absolutes.

They have weak-will and no mental discipline to resist "bad" things and so they want Big Brother John (Asscroft, and whoever his successor will be) to watch over them. But the rest of us have to suffer for that, of course, because whatever they legislate will not affect just them.

46. We are dealing with a "Cult" like following of the bush coward
These people have been brainwashed much like the Moonies did back in the 60's , they receive their brainwashing by multiple sources every day. It's as scary as the sci-fi movie ( the body snatchers?) where aliens replace human bodies with aliens, you can see them but they all think the same - none and do independent thinking. The GOP are using a simple yet slow proces of stealing more and more each electon, stealing votes to pick off people in key areas to get the backing they need, time is on their side, they are doing it over multible elections to avoid suspicion. reasonable thinkers must take a close look at the entire process. We need Michael Moore to do a couples ivestigation of the process and point out how the last few elections have so many unexplainable results.

...these people apparently believe that "Kerry kills babies". These are the same kind of whackos that blow up buildings and kill doctors. For them, in their deluded minds, participating in electoral fraud is FAR less morally repugnant than not doing so. These are fanatics, extremists, willfully ignorant and operating completely independent of reality.

A truck taking ballots from the polling center to the central elections office, just a quick detour, and they've done a "grand work" as a soldier in the army of Jesus. And consider the rewards they think they'll recieve, as demonstrated in this article of wall to wall looniness.

see Bush as a Jesus figure. They know they are innocents. They don't read anything that would expose them to Enron, or Wall St. Crooks. They don't know anything about the "Environment" other than it rains too much sometimes...or sometimes it's dry for too long.

They are innocents. We shouldn't condemn them. We can't educate them as to what's going on. We have to protect them, because protecting them, protects us all... JMO, here.

By that do you mean that they are not normal evangelicals, or normal in the sense of sane?

Sadly, I have met quite a few evangelicals like this. One of my old bosses had a low level management position and 9 kids.

God told him to be fruitful and multiply. But he did not tell him how to feed his brood. He has no plans to help any of his kids with college.

Had a huge sore on her left breast that she ignored for months because she said "God will heal it." Her husband, a stupid cracker ignoramus, either didn't notice it or didn't care enough to do anything about it. When it burst open and bled profusely and she had to be rushed to the hospital and was diagnosed with Stage III-B breast cancer, it was too late. God helps those who HELP THEMSELVES.

86. Treatment of gays is not a Red State/Blue State issue...
We liberals now have to couch our support for our gay and lesbian brothers and sisters as a Blue State/Grey State issue.

If we're going to go head-to-head with moral absolutists, we have to show how extreme they are, and how absolutely wrong they are. We have to portray their beliefs as a Grey State issue, as in the southern states' treatment of blacks. Grey states used the Bible to justify slavery, and now the new Grey states use religion as their foundation to justify discrimination against gays and lesbians.

This point of view might cost us elections at first; the cause of the abolitionists wasn't popular at first, either. But this comes down to a matter of equality, and on this topic we must not yield. Gays and lesbians have a right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. To deny them such is un-American.

Equality must be our cause. The line must be drawn. The battle must be fought. We must fight for our gay and lesbian brothers and sisters as hard as our abolitionist ancestors did for blacks.

With lives so controlled and a social circle that does not extend outside the family and church I think the kids grow up in a bubble that never exposes them to ideas and thoughts broader than this bubble.

Then many of these kids will go to bible colleges or if they go to a wider public university with probably end up joining the Young Repukes. And note the trend we hear from them to protest "liberal professors".

It was the wider world that allowed me to expand my view beyond the bigotry of my father.

capital.... by getting many many Americans to stand out in the rain for upwards of 10 hours to vote me out... (I was never voted in) so I have earned alot of political capital... and I'm going to spend it however I choose... that is my right, and you have no right to oppose me.

52. These people are being used.
They are who they are, their beliefs are what they are. We're not going to change them by screaming that they are idiots.

They live in a closed world where very little of the outside world is allowed in. They have a radical agenda and believe that they are on the side of the Angels. They are a voting block that is easily manipulated. They will vote where they are told to vote. I've seen a little of this mentality with the Hassidic Jews in New York City. They are only a tiny part of the population but because they follow their leaders and vote as ordered they have an outsized influence on politics.

Perhaps our only chance to get at these people is to somehow convince them of the fact that their political leaders are using them shamelessly. We have to attack the Republicans on moral issues. I believe that the Bible has a few things to say about greed, lying and theft.

67. I'm behind enemy lines
Save for my spouse, I've always lived among right wing republicans within a militaristic atmosphere. I'm not a pacifist but a moderate democrat. All wars since WWII are shaky to not justified on my moral compass. Especially Vietnam and now Iraq.

The people I live among are not monsters but have a very warped sense of right and wrong. They only seek out news sources that back their biases. It's so hard to explain but after the age of 30 there's little hope of converting them from the "dark side."

THE ANSWER dear fellow DUers is for *US* to organize and set aside our petty differences.

Remember this all started with <cough> Newt's "contract with America." If we want to have a prayer (pun not intended) to reclaim our democracy from the corporate fascists, we MUST set aside our petty differences and "work together" like there's no tomorrow. There may not be one if these folks realize their agenda.

58. I read this and my heart sank
- it's precisely these mind-programmed people who are hurting themselves and their children and don't even realize it.

I wonder what they think of the notion of Christian charity - of other people struggling finacially as they are but are slightly worse off? The economy doesn't pick up because Bush doesn't really care about it - he has his precious second term now and can do as he pleases - all he has to do is say "the economy's strong and it's getting stronger" and "we're working real hard" as jobs are lost by the truckload and incomes decrease.

This guy is working long days and delivering pizza two nights a week - what if something happens to him - who will provide for his family - PRAYER ???

One can be pious AND thinking too - wanting to get ahead is NOT a sin.

64. This quote is telling:
"I don't blame President Bush for anything that's happened with my income," Cary says. Rather, he looks at Bush as someone who believes in "personal responsibility," which Cary believes in as well. Don't complain. Solve. "There are jobs out there," he says, and as tired as he might be on Saturday night as he drives the streets of northern Ohio, he can use that time to listen to worship tapes, to think, to pray and to remind himself of what the priorities of a good life should be.

To me, this encapsulizes why people vote against their economic interests. They have bought into the rhetoric of "personal responsbility" wholesale.

The joke is, I'm not kidding. Avon Lake is right next door to Sheffield Lake, one of the poorest districts of Lorain County. SL is a white trash wasteland.

It's people like this in Ah-HIGH-Ah that delivered the "election" to Lancelot on a silver platter.

Morals must not include killing 100,000 Iraqis and Afghans. Nor must it include using America's young adults as bullet fodder to support Der Fuhrer's Oil Wars.

68. Reminds me of the car I saw a couple of weeks ago...
It was rusted out, belching smoke, and obviously on its last legs. There was a pizza delivery sign strapped to the roof. It was being driven by an angry-looking man who was at least 35. And it was plastered with B/C '04 stickers. :eyes:

The biggest stroke of genius the neocons had was convincing people like this to vote against their own interests in the name of "values."

70. We have to have the American Taliban in power for the majority to see
how bad things can be. It's like telling a little kid to not touch a hot stove or they will get burned. They have to get burned before they know what you are talking about. America has to get burned before enough of us learn what a "moral" society means.

I don't like it anymore than anyone here but it has to be done. I only hope that someday the country will recover from this nightmare. I will probably be dead by then but the young people of today have a real job ahead of them. If they don't start getting more involved they will remain under the thumbs of these folks.

In my time we fought against this but now we are up against something much more powerful that what we had to fight against. Us boomers are going to fade away in the next couple of decades. In a way I'm glad I am as old as I am. I don't want to live in the America the right is building for us. I don't see anything that can stop it from happening now that the right has all the power.

71. People like you
Did you pray for the poor this morning. did you pray for people out of work. did you pray for 100,000 Iraqis who have been killed. Bush is an angel of light in the last days many shall come in my name and deceive many. Jesus was talking to the church. Bush is a liar. Fact all liars shall have their part in the lake of fire. Fact Bush is prideful. Pride cometh before a fall. How about the divorce rate in the church, how about 73% of Americans live together. How about all this rich evangelical preachers who help no one in time of need.
Listen to you in your Utopia everything was about you nothing about the rest of the darn country that is suffering. Not to leave out, Bush is a thief. he stole the surplus, our money gave it to the rich and gave them a big tax break so the would not have to pay a big tax on the surplus he stole. Did you pray for those who do not have health care, oh Jerry Falwell pay for someones operation. did he pray that Bush and Chaney would get saved. Kerry quoted scripture during the debate Bush could not quote one. This man is no more saved than the man in the moon.:puke:

Unfortunately, it would go over their heads, because they "believe."
Whatever that is supposed to mean. The cure for ignorance is education-which they passionately reject. There is no cure for stupidity. Wonder what their response will be when their ignorant "rapture" children are drafted and sent to die in one of their "Moral Man's" wars. They prayed for this horrendous mess in order to be able to flaunt their "holier than thou" stupidity.Let them take personal responsibility for once and clean up the mess themselves. Let them scream; let them suffer; and let them die. I have NO sympathy for them.

If heaven had people like you there I would rather go to hell. Don't get mad just think about what I said.

PS
The rich man asked Jesus what must I do to inherit eternal life. Jesus said sell everything you have give it to the poor and follow me. the rich man went away sad because he couldn't do it. Think Bush could do it. If Jesus was here today he would be a Democrat and the Bush administration would attack his character just like they did Kerry. The church has failed and now you want democracy to save the world. We came to this country to get away from people like you.

94. Message to Cary and Tara Leslie:
I posted something similar on another thread, but it's worth repeating here.

Cary, you will soon be getting up at 3:45 AM to board a military plane bound for Iraq. Your job will have been outsourced, your health insurance lost, and you will join the Army because you've run out of options and bill collectors are hounding you. I know you were looking forward to a vacation in the desert. I'm sure Iraq wasn't what you had in mind. Tara, you'd better keep praying that you keep your girlish figure because you're going to need it when you shove your ass into hot pants and your feet into a pair of go-go boots. You'll be displaying your "moral absolutes" nightly at some strip club on the edge of town in order to make ends meet. Don't worry about dancing in front of strangers, though. I'm sure you'll be surprised to see how many of your neighbors - particularly the good Republican churchgoing ones - are dropping by for a peek. Pray, too, that when you get home, there isn't a man in uniform waiting by the front door to tell you something.

Have a good four years, you two. You will reap what you have sewn.
