Police and anti-trust officials from four countries have swooped on Channel Tunnel operator Eurotunnel and three ferry companies for evidence of suspected cartels, the European Commission said.
The EU's executive said it raided the firms because of concerns about competition on routes across the Channel and in the Nordic market.
"The purpose of these inspections is to ascertain whether there is evidence of suspected market-sharing agreements and related illegal practices aimed at foreclosing competition," the Commission said in a statement.
Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Co Plc, Denmark's Scandlines, Swedish rival Stena AB, and Anglo-French Eurotunnel all confirmed that European Commission officials had visited them.
