Bush Win Boosts Plan For Nuclear Waste Dump In Nevada
<LAS VEGAS -- Nevada voters who oppose having a nuclear waste dump at Yucca Mountain now wonder if they'll be able to block it, with President George W. Bush winning re-election.

In fact, Nevada voters went for Bush by a 2 percent margin, although it was John Kerry who promised he'd block the dump if elected.

Bush has approved the plan to bury the nation's most radioactive waste in Nevada, saying his decision was based on "sound science."

Democratic U.S. Rep. Shelley Berkley said three-quarters of Nevadans oppose the project. But the head of the protest group Nuclear Waste Task Force said voters apparently thought other issues were more important.

Voters did re-elect Sen. Harry Reid, who could help block the project if he becomes Senate minority leader. >

7. the stuff has to pass thru UT to get to NV - Ut=71%Bush
These people have fried eggs for brains already. Idiots and the religious right. Way religious right..... too stupid to know enough to care. Maybe we could turn it into the 'newest Barbie cosmetic poultice' and sell it right back to them; When their faces 'melt' off and their vanity snaps them into reality, they might get the idea "someone's been alyin to 'em". We could call it 'Bush Cream.'

Edited on Fri Nov-05-04 08:34 AM by nemdaille
This should eliminate about 3 red states, NV, UT, and AZ when the damned thing blows up in all our faces; literally.

I've been fighting Yucca Mt., the DOE, the Mormon idiocy, and the monied interests since the late 80's; not to mention my ground work on friends and family since long before that time.

Aw, well. So glows NV.

Edited to add response to earlier post re: Dem Senator Reid, as far as I'm concerned, Harry is a DINO. He's a Mormon, anti-choice "Democrat"

It's part of the NV schizophrenic (sp?) nature.

29. I'm a Vegas resident and I agree with you TOTALLY
I'm counting the days until I have a way out of here. I hate it, my wife hates it... the fucking idiot tourists that come here (and which I have to deal with on a daily basis at my job) just see the stupid shit on the Travel Channel and the networks and think this is some kind of goddamn paradise. IT'S A SHITHOLE with no infrastructure to speak of and planning that's all but nonexistent. And what cracked me up about this election cycle was the ballot question about "raising" the minimum wage from the Federal minimum of $5.15, to I believe $6.15. The catch is, it would ONLY be for those people who have no health insurance! Now, from where I stand, I would think it would be cheaper for employers to offer insurance to the workers for like $250 a month, with a $50 deductible, a $25 prescription copay for generics, and something like a 75% copay for all services. NOBODY would take it, and the employers would only pay a fraction of that extra dollar an hour over time. I voted against that measure, hoping that it will get shot down and someone with some fucking BALLS will tell these greedy industries to shove it and do the thing right.

Sorry to the rest of you Vegas DU'ers. I know some of you may have a totally different take on this town. I just needed to rant. Forgive me, please as I'm not trying to offend; I'm just soooo pissed off. :(

23. Yucca Mountain will cost taxpayers ~$28 billion
It was supposed to be funded by the Nuclear Waste Fund - a 0.1 cent fee on nuclear generated electricity.

The NWF will ultimately generate $28 billion - Yucca Mountain will ultimately cost $56 billion.

It will also take 35,000 individual shipments to YM to deal with the current inventory of military and civilian nuclear waste.

These shipments will be transiting through heavily populated areas (i.e., your town).

Finally, YM cannot accommodate future nuclear waste production - we will have to build another site sometime in the near future.

FUCK BUSH and FUCK NUCLEAR POWER...

25. Las Vegans need to blame Elko County for this....
Email me at the DU link above and I will send you some compilations I have.

Elko County elected officials have been wined and dined by Bob List, Nuke Lover for Jesus. Elko County didn't get the koolaid money that Eureka and other rural counties did for that five year period that was to educate the public on nuclear waste storage and transportation.

Not one elected official up here is opposed to Yucca Mtn. and they actually believe that they will get money for supporting it. Elko County is the biggest rural county that the NUMBER 2 transportation route runs through and we all know you Las Vegans will not let NUMBER ONE route go through your neighborhood.

Elko County voted a majority Repuke, claiming even a large majority of Dems went for Bush, brags that they pushed the State for Bush, he won by 2%.

Go figure. Next time, look bigger than your own borders for your enemy and then watch his habits. Think like KKKarl Rove or you will never win a political battle again.

http://www.elkodaily.com/articles/2004/11/03/news/local/news1.txt

ELKO - Elko County voters played a historic role in the re-election of George W. Bush as president of the United States.

Voters in Elko County accounted for more than half of the president's winning margin in Nevada, which proved to be the state that gave Bush the needed electoral votes to capture a second term in the White House.

Bush carried Nevada by a 21,567 vote margin, or a 50-47 percentage edge.

Elko County returns accounted for more than 50 percent of that margin when voters cast 11,935 votes for the president.

Nevada swung the national election tally that led to the concession this morning by Democratic challenger John Kerry.

County voters cast ballots for Bush by a 78 percent to 20 percent margin.

snip...

She said she was ecstatic that Elko County was pivotal in providing the margin of difference in the election.

Commissioner Warren Russell noted the historical context of the Elko County vote.

"I think this is a proud moment for Elko County to be so instrumental in electing our new president," Russell said. "President Bush is going to be on our side in two areas that are crucial to our state and that is mining and agriculture."

Elko Mayor Mike Franzoia said both the Bush and Kerry campaigns anticipated the power of rural areas.

"That's why they thought Elko was important," Franzoia said. "It's why Cheney came here and Kerry sent his people here. I'm glad Nevada pushed it over the top."
(Elko City is a city of about 16,000 and Cheney gave us a personal neocon enema when he landed here in August)

snip...
