NBC BREAKING:"NOT TELLING ALL THE TRUTH" EPA&NYC

What was known about post-9/11 air

Inspector general says
White House changed EPA statements about
safety at Ground Zero

NBC NEWS
Sept. 3 — Just days after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, the agency responsible for the environmental health of Americans declared the air and water safe in New York. But now, in her first interview since the release of a troubling report, the Environmental Protection Agency’s top watchdog says the agency didn’t have the facts when it said it was safe to move back to the neighborhoods near Ground Zero. And she’s pointing the finger all the way to the White House.

Interview with EPA Inspector General Nikki Tinsley

By Lisa Myers
NBC NEWS

Sept. 3 — The following is the transcript of NBC News’ Lisa Myers’ interview with EPA Inspector General Nikki Tinsley about Tinsley’s report charging that the EPA did not give full information to the public about the safety of breathing the air around the World Trade Center site in New York City after Sept. 11, 2001..

9. Does every story have to be cleared by GE, Westinghouse... before it gets
reported by a network?

From toostupidtobepresident.com last week:

Top 11 reasons the Dubya strong-armed the EPA into lying about air quality in NYC following the 9-11 attacks:

11. No one in the administration has ties to the air-filtration industry.

10. Testing Whitman's loyalty.

9. Two words: blue state.

8. Preparing to gut air quality standards anyway.

7. Tired of hearing how resilient New Yorkers are.

6. Planning to eliminate the EPA anyway.

5. Because the lying wasn't about sex, it didn't seem like a big deal.

4. The airborne compounds in New York are not nearly as lethal as the harmless ones produced by depleted uranium munitions in Yugoslavia and Iraq.

3. "If I don't get reelected, the terrorists win."

2. Anticipated need for diversionary scandal to obscure multiple larger scandals.

And the number one reason Dubya strong-armed the EPA into lying about air quality in NYC following the 9-11 attacks:

1. Habit.

OK, this is it. Starpass (I think) had a thread today about why she thought W was done. I couldn't agree. But now I can. There is absolutely no way they can spin, excuse, or blow this off. They said what they wanted to say, what people wanted to hear, the easiest thing at the time, without the slightest regard for the humans involved. And their convention is there. Where's Hillary? What does she say?

12. Wait--this story has been all over news last few days and I saw it
in Newsweek's new issue today. However, what you post above is a lying twist!!!!---whomever this person is is saying that they weren't given all the facts before they made their pronouncement, etc. (and then indicates she was also pointing to the WH). In all these other reports they OUTRIGHT say the EPA was strongarmed/ordered by Bush to lie. Sadly, this story is already an attempt to pull the old "we didn't know all the facts" shit. And that is typical Bush-speak.

22. They weren't give the facts
because they didn't collect the facts. The EPA knew they had a potential environmental disaster on their hands but just like NORAD they stood down. For three days after the attack, the EPA didn't even bother to take measurements. Excuse me?

"The first measurements of some of the contaminants weren't taken until September 14, while other contaminants were not measured until September 23... Because there are only limited data on these critical few days, exposures and potential health impacts cannot be evaluated with certainty for this time period." (No shit!)

New York City to Hold 2004 Republican National

Offer Ongoing Support

WASHINGTON - Republican National Committee Chairman Marc Racicot and New York City Mayor
Michael Bloomberg today made history by officially making New York City the home of the 2004
Republican National Convention. The Chairman and Mayor signed a Site-City Agreement at a
ceremony following a unanimous vote by the 165 members of the RNC at their Winter Meeting in
Washington, DC.

The event marked the first time the Republican Party has chosen New York City for its national
convention. Governor George Pataki participated in the event by signing a letter expressing the State
of New York’s full support for the Convention. Former NYC Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who will serve as
Co-Chair of the NYC Host Committee, attended the ceremony and offered his continued support to the
City and the Party.

<and>

“The Republican Party is thrilled to call New York City home to the 2004 Republican National
Convention. Though the competition for the Convention was intense, New York City provides us the
most outstanding backdrop to showcase our Party and our candidate for President in 2004. I thank
Mayor Bloomberg, and his staff; Governor Pataki; Mayor Giuliani and all the people of New York for
making this opportunity possible for our Party,” said Chairman Racicot.

By the way, do any of you all remember the RNC of 1992? It was a disaster for them. I can hardly wait.

23. FubarFly yes,but i think we need some outside help
Senator Clinton is trying, alot of other NY reps too, but bloomberg&pataki(mayor&governor)have been silent & you can bet they will cover bush's behind. People here upset, angry & concerned. I just wish everyone, regardless of their state, would call Hillary &offer their support for the investigation, she has called for.

Recent Poll:

Bush, Bloomberg
bashed in 9/11 poll

Mayor Bloomberg continues to get a dismal 33% approval rating, while 52% disapprove of his performance since he took office in 2002.
If the mayor runs for reelection in 2005, 19% of New Yorkers say they would vote for him, while 57% would vote for his Democratic opponent.

The federal government's handling of the environmental fallout from 9/11 also rankles New Yorkers.

"Fifty-five percent take the Bush White House to task for urging the Environmental Protection Agency in the days after 9/11 to present misleading assurances about air quality near Ground Zero."

In a striking turnabout, 56% of New Yorkers disapprove of the job President Bush is doing in the war on terrorism. A year ago, the numbers were reversed: Washington's war on terror enjoyed a solid 50% approval rating.

Few votes for Bush

The President has little hope of attracting new voters in New York in 2004, despite the draw of the Republican National Convention next summer.

Sixty-four percent of New Yorkers say they will vote for the Democratic candidate in next year's presidential elections.

Know there is a counter convention organizing against the republican NY 2004 convention. But thats not till next year.

28. we're told the standard is this...
...that a story isn't usually reported by other outlets until the AP has reported it.

That makes AP WH correspondent Ron Fournier the most powerful reporter in the country. With his alternate, Scott Lindlow, second.

However, don't get too thrilled about their power. Last year I wrote Fournier to urge him to cover the conflict of interest caused by the Bush family's profiting off war through the Carlyle Group. He wrote me back that he didn't know anything about the Carlyle Group, but he would "ask around."

Please tell her for me, I now trust bush about as much as I did his "Read My lips" Dad, & thats he's finished here. We have put up with alot here, his "trifecta jokes", his selling his 9/11 photo to make a profit for the GOP, his unwilligness to help the 9/11 families with an investigation, Blackout2003, our 1st responders unprepared for any attack, because there isnt enough of money because bush has yet to send what he promised in 2001, and now this. Enough.

32. I just finished reading the Vanity Fair expose....
... of the Department of the Interior, a harsh, harsh criticism directed at Gale Norton, and, more specifically, the guy who really runs the department, mining industry wonderboy Stephen Griles.

According to the article, Christie Whitman left the EPA out of disillusionment in her duties. Rather than creating EPA policy and sending it to the White House for review, she found herself called into Cheney's office, where she was told exactly what to say and how to say it. This was not admitted by Whitman, a good soldier, but rather implied by off-the-record sources.

I suggest this disturbing article as a must-read for anyone concerned with the Bush Administration's assault on the environment. I was literally shaking in anger while reading the article. :grr:  :grr:

Has anyone else read it?

39. Hi Katie!!!!
Edited on Thu Sep-04-03 07:56 PM by VolcanoJen
It's the Vanity Fair that has Prince William (England... Diana and Charles' eldest son, and future King of England) in a black-n-white photo on the cover. Most of the issue has to due with European Royalty, which is a pretty nauseating subject, imho. :-)

ON EDIT: It's the September 2003 issue!! :-)

However, buried deep within is the most scathing indictment of the Bush Administation's disastrous environmental policy that I have ever read. It's simply a must-read, and after reading it, you will be cocked-and-loaded for any argument against any Republican. It's shocking... I just cannot stress that enough, and luckily the article truly emphasizes the fact that very few Americans realize the extent of the danger we're in, vis-a-vis Chimpy.

I was so furious after reading the article that I practically went out looking for a fight!!!! Dammit... we have got to let American voters know what they're doing... it's a wholesale land-grab for polluting corporations, and it's practically sinful. Arrrrggghhhh!

Hope that helps... and if you can't find it on your newsstand, check out your local library.

36. It was much worse than they're saying
Even the more accurate news reports focus solely on the air quality at Ground Zero. What they don't tell you is that there was a breeze blowing from lower Manhattan straight into the heart of Brooklyn. The air became thick with smoke and ash. Your eyes burned and got watery. You sneezed the particulates out for days. The dust kept settling in your house for at least a week. There were probably millions of people affected by this smoke. The scope is so huge, however, that it may be years before the full damage of that day is quantified.

You can see how extensive the smoke was at the following link, although it does not show you how dense it was.

One small fiber floating in the air inhaled causes Pnuemian and Asbestosis Lung disease. We saw the first cases showing from the rescue workers. Even the NYC councilman on MSNBC admittted it wasn't cleaned up properly.

The WTC was filled with asbestos. No you guys are right its going to be horrible the lung disease NYC people are going to have!

53. That is a good point, I have also thought that the speed
with which the clean-up was done was very peculiar. The steel was sent to China in record time, even against protests from engineers and firefighters who wanted a thorough exaination of the "evidence."

My heart goes out to New Yorkers who have been through so much. Let's all keep on this story and continue working to get these nutcases out of our lives and bring on people of hope and vision.

I love New York!!!

50. Wow
I just realized that the image in this link documents the smoke before the towers fell. If I can work out some Photoshop issues I will post a picture that shows the cloud of smoke and debris from a closer view going directly into the populated areas of Brooklyn.

And we have hemmorhaged billions of dollars fighting our illegal war in Iraq while ignoring the problems we have here?

I can't understand why this is still so underpublicized.

47. No one even asked Witman - FOR WEEKS after the story broke
They kept asking the current stooge - which tells you where the media is on this. I see W is staying in DC this year - if he thinks them "money-grubbing" New Yorkers (as they called us when asking for the PROMISSED 9.11 money) will forget this by next year, they don't know us very well!

51. This must be the story of THIS 9/11 anniversary: the wronged victims.
The rights of the victims must be upheld. They have breen wronged by the Bush administration. Chronic illness is the result for many, all because the Republicans in Washington put corporations before people's lives.

What a telling contrast to the "Bush bump" last year.

54. Watch Hillary on this
as she WILL get a Senate investigation on this and it will lead right to the WH!! I watched her on CSPAN go over point by point on how the WH deceived NYers on the air quality after 9/11.

I predict this will be a BIG story to watch closely in 2004!

56. I would not be surprized if the Repub convention
turns out to be the mother of all debacles.

Can you imagine the protests by then. If they do not have a full open investigation, with no censored passages (for national security of course) then expect things to be very, very ugly in N.Y.C.
