Just learn to accept that Bush has won, says Blair
The Times
By Philip Webster and Peter Riddell

http://images.thetimes.co.uk/TGD/picture/0,,158166,00.jpg
'I do not feel we have been acting out of blind loyalty or out of compulsion as an ally' - Tony Blair (CHRIS HARRIS)

EUROPEAN leaders must emerge from their “state of denial” and wake up to the fact that they will be dealing with President Bush for the next four years, Tony Blair says today.

In an appeal to America and the countries that opposed the war in Iraq to come together, the Prime Minister tells The Times: “The election has happened. America has spoken. The rest of the world should listen.” He adds: “It is important that America listens to the rest of the world too. But the fact is that President Bush is there for four years. He is there because the American people have chosen to elect him.” Without naming his targets, Mr Blair says:

“Some people are in a sort of state of denial.” He predicts they will soon be in a “more receptive mood”.

Mr Blair spoke to The Times before travelling to Brussels for a European summit, where he expected the first discussions last night to be about the re-election of Mr Bush and an agenda on which they could move forward together. He makes plain that he will take his role as a bridge between the two continents even more seriously than before, saying Britain is “uniquely placed” because of its “immensely strong” alliance with America to mark out the common ground for agreement.

2. End Bush 'denial' Blair tells EU
BBC:

Tony Blair is urging European leaders to wake up from their "state of denial" over President Bush's re-election.

"America has spoken. The rest of the world should listen," the prime minister said in an interview with The Times newspaper, published on Friday.

Mr Blair is at a summit in Brussels, where Iraq and European justice and immigration plans are on the agenda.

French President Jacques Chirac reacted to his warning by saying Europe instead needed to reinforce its own unity.

Mr. Blair, you fail to recognize that 50% of america opposes bush,
that 50% that YOUR PARTY represents. That you cooperate to undermine
your own constituency's values, is sickening to say the least. I
think you shold send you sons to iraq so you suffer personally when
your people get murdered by your own hands.

I hope you apologize personally to the familes of black watch

8. Junior needed Blair and massive scapegoating conflict like Iraq
to divert attention from ENRON.

Blair panicked in Spring 2002 and told the House of Commons: "There is NO Enron scandal in the UK".

His next authoritative statement to the House was that "Saddam is a real and continuing danger....Weapons of mass destruction......45 minute capability of striking Cyprus".

22. Blair sparks anger with 'wake up' call over Bush
Evening Standard
5 November 2004

Prime Minister Tony Blair's call for Europe to wake up to the reality of George Bush's re-election as US President gained a frosty reception in Brussels today.

In a newspaper interview today, Mr Blair accused fellow EU leaders of being in a "state of denial" over the second Bush term and urged them to forge closer trans-Atlantic relations, particularly over the rebuilding of Iraq.

But French President Jacques Chirac countered that the EU needed to reinforce its own unity in a world which he said was increasingly divided.

While the Prime Minister claimed to have detected a readiness among his European colleagues to rebuild bridges with Washington, Mr Chirac pointedly stressed the need to develop EU cohesion in a "multi-polar" world.

Heroes and villains: George W Bush and Berti Vogts

Stewart Kirkpatrick
skirkpatrick at scotsman dot com

(snip)
Hero: Dubya
You've got to hand it to George Walker Bush. Everyone in the world thought he was a moronic, mouth-breathing, knuckle-dragging, mindless puppet doing the bidding of his super-rich, neo-con, oil-soaked paymasters while paying lip service to the concerns of the great unwashed.

Instead it turns out he's a political genius.

The American economy is going down the toilet. It has a budget deficit ($4 trillion over the next 10 years) that would make Kim Jong Il blush. Worryingly, China and Hong Kong have accumulated $177 billion of US debt, giving the world's biggest dictatorship a great deal of economic power over the world's richest democracy.

Vast amounts have been squandered on enormous tax cuts that disproportionately favour the super-wealthy (the bottom 60% of US society got a mere 14.7% of Bush's $1.6 trillion giveaway, while the richest 1% got half of it). Meanwhile unemployment has rocketed. And for George, healthcare is just another word that begins with "h", like "Iran". In short, the ordinary American is getting royally shafted by the Bush administration.

And yet Dubya persuaded the suckers to vote for him. The man's a genius.

How'd he do it? Well, he made them scared. Not in the way he makes us scared - by having his finger on the nuclear trigger while looking very dim and slightly deranged - but by raising mythical bogeymen to terrify middle America.
(snip/...)

On edit, adding more:

As a result we're in for an exciting four years of unfettered neo-con crusading. Especially if you live in or near a member of the axis of evil: Iran, North Korea, Palestine, Syria, Libya, Venezuela, the Pitcairn Islands, France, San Francisco...

On the brighter side, US domestic policy's going to be dictated by extreme fundamentalists so the colonials might as well tear up that precious consitution of theirs and replace it with the Book of Leviticus.

37. So Tony wants everybody to just "get over it," 'eh?
Well, let me tell YOU something, Tony. It's not denial. It's MOURNING. Half of America is in that state at this very moment. I've had friends calling me, telling me about their friends calling them, telling them about THEIR friends calling THEM - and every last one of them is HEART-SICK.

I hope, if fewer people here have backbone that at least others do, around the globe. I, for one, CANNOT just magically change my mind and my thinking and decide that this war is just fine and going well, that wars of aggression against people who never attacked or threatened us are okay, that writing discrimination into our constitution is okay, that women losing the right to have the final say over what happens with their own bodyes is okay, that bullying people all over the world is okay, that the "my way or the highway" crap is okay, that "can't we all just get along - as long as everybody does what WE say?" is okay, that fomenting anger and discord and disunity and dishonesty is okay, that being the sneakiest, most deceptive, most narrow-minded regime in American history is okay. It's not okay for me. It will NEVER be okay for me. It's not okay for the rest of the world THAT WE HAVE TO SHARE, Tony. It's NOT okay. It's. Just. Not. Okay. It never will be. Nothing will EVER convince me that it's okay, and that it's something I should just get over. Anymore than your Churchill got over Hitler and decided to be okay with it.

HOSTIL' injuns are on the edge of town, threatening yer wives 'n' cattle! And those pesky Democrats want you to shoot the Sheriff! Whaddya say to that?..............................

This corrupt exercise in mass deception cost a billion dollars in TV advertising and twice that in campaign expenses (some of them genuine).

But it was worth it for the big business interests that dominate American politics. Bush is back, sponsored by good 'ole US oil. If that is democracy, then I am the Count of Monte Cristo. If only bamboozled Yankees were involved, we could all go about our business without a care......................

This is, to use Hollywood jargon, a clear and present danger. But a more insidious and even more lethal menace lurks behind the victory of Ole Cross-Eyes. The Republicans mobilised as never before the politics of fear. They convinced a majority of US citizens that their homes and families were under immediate threat from al-Qaeda. They are not.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=102x961337

Especially the "arsehole.....oil & money" part.

This was on the front page of the London Evening Standard last night and on all the main UK TV News channels.

Sums this up pretty well.

64. I think that this is wrong...
Tony Blair was very helpful to Clinton too, and the Brits have more honor in the world today that America does, IMHO.

Tony Blair has made Britain the pre-eminent power in Europe, and I think that Britain is the best choice for that role.

He also accepts blame for his county's mistakes, something that I have never seen Bush do. He is an honorable man and a good leader, even if you disagree with him. I'll bet that he also was rooting for Kerry.

Just my opinion.

81. He refuses to apologise for the war
he has apologised for wrong information given 'in good faith'.

It's not the 'good faith' bits I object to; it's the lies that Alistair Campbell and his team concocted, made in extremely bad faith. Blair has, in fact, promoted the man who was in charge of transforming the intelligence, which was full of caveats, 'maybe's and 'possibly's, into certainties and fearmongering '45 minutes' quotes. When Campbell was caught red-handed trying to pass off a 10 year old thesis as current intelligence, Blair didn't sack him, or even rebuke him.

Blair has no honour left whatsoever. I actually trusted Thatcher more than him.

For someone who you think was 'rooting for Kerry', he seems to be rather overjoyed at Bush getting back in. Telling other European leaders to 'get over it', rushing off to see him; will Bush finally give him the Best in Show Obedience award that's been waiting for him for a year (aka the Congressional Gold Medal)?

76. Not bloody likely, Tones.
He reminds me for all the world of the classic enabler, cleaning up for and justifying the abuser, drunk, etc.

Why doesn't he warn Bush that America is gaining enemies, not peace and not allies, thanks to Bush's policies? Does he think the world is going to utter an Emily Litella "Never mind" and simply comply with Bush?

I think it's Blair who's kidding himself.

78. He's trying to evoke a reaction
So he knows what to tell the weecowboy. He knows when he shows up here next week, that Bush is going to ask HIM to implement the "Kerry Plan" of engaging allies to internationalize the democratization of Iraq. The weecowboy cannot do the asking, because everyone HATES him and he has already said "Yer with us or agin us." For some reason, probably LOCATION, the weecowboy thinks Tony holds some sway over what he regards as those 'euro-toting bastards' (NOT!).

This is what happens when the moron in charge does not read the paper, and gets his news from Faux.

Tony knows he's gonna be asked to schmooze the EU, so he is letting them know ahead of time. Of course, the problem is that the "Good Deal" window passed when the insurgents in Iraq started killing soldiers. Had we given the Europeans contracts back at the outset, instead of being piggy and demanding all the lucre for ourselves, it would be much harder for EU countries to back out, they'd be invested and wanting their return...they might have even been persuaded to add a few troops in addition to contractors to the mix.

But NOW...it looks like a bad case of ever-diminishing returns over there. There's a lot of cost, and not much forseeable benefit, unless we declare martial law and shoot everyone on sight. That ain't gonna happen. We can feel the pinch of the rock and the hard place, thanks to the weecowboy.
