NYT: Rove in Position to Consolidate Republican Majority (for generation)
Campaign Strategist Is in Position to Consolidate Republican Majority

By TODD S. PURDUM and DAVID D. KIRKPATRICK
Published: November 5, 2004

....with Mr. Bush's re-election, (Karl) Rove has not only cemented his reputation as one of the canniest campaign gurus in a generation but has also put himself in position to shape second-term policies that could help realize his longtime goal of consolidating a broad Republican electoral majority for a generation to come.

"He is the master of the game," said a respectful Democratic rival, Donna Brazile, who managed Al Gore's campaign in 2000....

***

Over the past four years, Mr. Rove has made himself the face of the White House's outreach to the evangelical Protestants and other "people of faith" who may well have helped propel Mr. Bush to victory on Tuesday. Conservative leaders said he was unfailingly attentive to their concerns and complaints, even in the hectic final days and weeks of a campaign in which he counted on turning out the president's core supporters in big numbers....

***

Unlike James Carville, who helped elect Bill Clinton, or Lee Atwater, who was the first President Bush's political lieutenant, Mr. Rove works in the White House itself, and is the de facto domestic policy chief. His influence is presumed to extend to major and minor policy decisions, whether tax cuts or steel tariffs, stem-cell research or private investment accounts for Social Security.

He is the mastermind behind a campaigning and governing philosophy that puts a set of core policies in the service of politics to an unusually direct degree. Some elements of this approach are tonal and symbolic, while others - like a tax cut on dividends or a prescription drug benefit for Medicare - are more concrete....

1. Fuck you, Donna Brazille
You've been pals with Karl Rove since you helped him to steal the office of the Presidency from Gore in 2000.

You're a traitor to your party, your country, and your ethnicity.

Oh yeah, did I mention Fuck You?

Breathing a bit labored, perhaps?

2. he could very well do it.
nobody loathes rove more than me -- but the guy is a smart, skillful tactician.
and lefties of any stripe will never beat him if don't give the guy his props and study what he does and go after his strategy that way.
ignorance, being dismissive, arrogance, blaming the media -- none of that will help until there is a comprehensive and studied look at what rove, and folks like the heritage foundation do to succeed.

Such is the wreched state of politics in this country that a political advisor acting as "de facto domestic policy chief" is lauded as a mastermind and not derided as scandalous.

16. Bad policy through politics.
Note that they have to keep him hidden so as to keep the phoney Bush "nice guy" image operational. Didn't Rove smear Max Cleland and John McCain, among others?

And as when Tom Lehrer declared satire dead the day Henry Kissinger won the Nobel Peace Prize, we have to retire the trophy for the comment that Rove, a disciple of both Richard Nixon and Lee Atwater, is a "Christian." God help us if this is the new faith.

Actually, it's the old faith -- greed, power, mammon, slander, deeds that must be hidden in order to bear fruit.

May God perform his justice on Karl Rove, thoroughly and for all to see. May we all live to see it, too.

25. Can't the party use fundraising to have a
non-election year (or four-year) campaign of commercials and publicity stunts to out rove to the nation? do it rove style... sneaky, subtle, constant, relentless character assassination. if enough people are fed his name via the media, he could easily become the next ken starr-like villian to the american people.

i honestly believe that if done right, the media will look at it as a fun scandal to drag him through the mud, and never catch on that it will have major political ramifications until it's too late.

i don't know. it's a dream... we can dream can't we?

29. Karl Rove = Rasputin of the * admin
"Over the past four years, Mr. Rove has made himself the face of the White House's outreach to the evangelical Protestants and other "people of faith"..."

What about what he said to John Dilulio in David Suskind's article in Esquire "The Dilulio Letter to Esquire 10/24/02".

"...For instance, there was Karl’s desire to have John cozy up to the conservative evangelicals, with whom DiIulio was having problems. DiIulio recalls Karl telling him to bury the hatchet "and start fighting the guys who are against us." DiIulio says he responded: "I’m not taking any shit off of Jerry Falwell. The souls of my dead Italian grandparents are crying out to me, ‘That guy’s not on the side of the angels.’ " Rove backed off, DiIulio recalls, and said, "Look, those guys don’t really matter to this president.""

I think it's just a matter of time before Karl's house of cards comes tumbling down. It won't be able to sustain the weight of his ego.

36. Rove a moron
Bush had a 90% approval rating after 9/11.

Bush won the election 51-49.

Rove was supposed to increase minorities in the Republican party. He barely escaped with a win.

It is disturbing, though, how the Republicans could consolidate power. We'll have to see if this is the case. Don't forget that the Republicans thought they had shaped the discourse forever after the Newt Gingrich revolution.

The Repubs got defeated the next term.
