MSNBC: 85 HS students sit-in to protest direction the nation is taking
Edited on Fri Nov-05-04 01:15 PM by jchild
Just on MSNBC. 85 Boulder High School students have been holding a sit-in in their school's library to protest the direction the nation is taking.

And who said young folks are apathetic?

Looking for a link now.

:yourock: Boulder kids!!

Worried students spend night in school to protest direction of country
By P. SOLOMON BANDA

Associated Press Writer

BOULDER, Colo. (AP) - At least 85 students worried about war, a return of the draft and the future of the environment staged an overnight protest in the Boulder High School library before leaving peacefully Friday morning.

The students said they wanted assurances from political leaders about the direction of the country. Rep. Mark Udall, D-Colo., met with some of the students for about an hour after they left the library at 7 a.m.

''We're worried that in four years we're going to be at war with five countries and we're going to have no trees,'' senior Cameron Ely-Murdock said. ''I know that's an extreme position, but I'm really worried about the draft,'' he said.

President Bush and other administration officials have repeatedly said they have no plans to reinstate a draft, despite concerns about the number of troops needed in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Principal Ron Cabrera agreed to let the students spend the night in the library if they would leave in time for Friday morning classes, which they did. A handful of teachers and parents stayed with them.

The sit-in began after school Thursday. The students, who brought sleeping bags and food, said they were not protesting Bush's re-election but were worried about the national debt, Iraq and other issues. The students said they wanted to talk to representatives of GOP Gov. Bill Owens and U.S. Rep. Marilyn Musgrave, R-Colo. Musgrave sponsored the failed constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage.

There's a little bit more at the link.

And thanks, DUer kagehime; here's the Boulder Camera report:

http://www.dailycamera.com/bdc/schools/article/0,1713,BDC_2488_3306287,00.html

About 85 Boulder High students camped out in the school library after classes Thursday, saying they wouldn't leave until Republican Party representatives pay them a visit.

Most of the students are too young to vote. But they said they're disgusted with the Bush administration's national debt, military recruitment in schools and disregard for the environment.

snip/

Although they organized the demonstration upon learning that President Bush had been re-elected, they emphasized that they were not protesting the election.

"We're protesting our futures, or lack thereof," said senior Travis Moe who works on the students' liberal "Student Worker" newspaper.

Several "Peace" flags hung from the bookshelves in the library. On the wall, crooked black markings proclaimed, "We are the generation that will have to take on and suffer from the burden."

The mostly female group sat on the floor and on tables, laughing, shaking maracas and patting drums to the time of a Pink Floyd song. Some played board games, read poetry and studied. Organizers called Republican officials on a speaker phone and left messages.

Much more at link above.

21. My God, I am so proud of you!
Do you hear the voices from the activists of the 1960's-- the proud, determined youth who fought against an unjust war in Vietnam, the risk of nuclear annhilation from US-Soviet proliferation, who fought for civil rights for blacks and and equal rights for women, who fought for Johnson's War on Poverty, and all the social changes that our parents and grandparents benefitted from for so long.

You have heard the call and I am proud this day! I support you! Stay strong!

Today, you guys are my heroes! This w2as just the kind of thing I needed to see from other people to inspire me. I worked my tail off the last few weeks here in Ohio to get out the vote for Kerry and was in the depths of despair when I read this thread. I'm ready to get back up on my hind legs and get back to work. We must soldier on! What about a national sit in? or a day when everybody who is worried/pissed off stays home from school and work and refuses to buy anything? Other ideas will be welcomed. Rock On!

31. Here is the email I just sent to the school library
An internet forum of which I am a member, Democratic Underground, with over 55,000 members from all across the world, is supporting the high-school students who are sitting in.

Please have them look at this:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=102&topic_id=961550&mesg_id=961550&page=

Their activism is truly heroic and we want them to know that they have nationwide support. I have sent them a bouquet, and it should be arriving shortly.

If they would like to respond to the forum, they can either respond to this email and I will forward their messages, or they can join Democratic Underground and post the messages themselves.

We are there for you....count this mama in! You guys (and gals) stay there until those Repukes and Bush administration look you in the eyes and tell you that there will be no draft...Sadly, your probably going to be there a long time to get that answer....

I would assume that after that, each and every one of these potential terrorists will receive mental health screenings, along with mandatory anti-depressant drug therapy so that they can adjust successfully to the will of the people.

Don't get me wrong, God bless these kids and I wish 'em luck. It's the only encouraging sign I've seen this entire week.

59. what are we going to do
So when are we going to do something. Are we going to let a bunch of kids lead the way? The marines are going to flatten Fallujah.
Thousands of innocent Iraqis are going to be killed. The blood of
these people will be on our hands because it is our government
that will be doing the killing.

We need to take to the streets. Make headlines. How about this- a human
chain across the George Washington Bridge with banners.
Stop the war- stop the killing- stop the madness. We have to be ready
to go to jail to take back our country.

Look we tried the electoral process. The Repugs cheated. We can't wait another four years. We have to act now.

40. Courage and Integrity

Standing up for what you believe in. I really really respect you.

Elizabeth Edwards shared this with us today - it helped us and we thought it might help you --

"But today I want to share something inspiring, part of a letter from Thomas Jefferson. This is from the new Bernstein biography of Jefferson. Jefferson sent the letter in 1798 after the passage of the Sedition Act:

"A little patience, and we shall see the reign of witches pass over, their spells dissolve, and the people, recovering their true sight, restore their government to its true principles. It is true that in the meantime we are suffering deeply in spirit, and incurring the horrors of a war and long oppressions of enormous public debt. If the game runs sometimes against us at home we must have patience till luck turns, and then we shall have an opportunity of winning back the principles we have lost, for this is a game where principles are at stake." See, this is what happens when you take Jesus out of the classroom. If they had Christian prayer every day, they'd see that Jesus wanted Bush to be president, and they should be happy to die in Iraq for Jesus' president while killing the Muslims. {/sarcasm]

53. I heard on the news this afternoon
That Republicans refused to meet with them, although the Dems did. The governor (who I guess is a Republican) told them that they would learn more about democracy if they went back to class. That is the difference between Repulbicans and Democrats in a nutshell. Democrats take thes students (and others) seriously while Republicans tell them to "sit down and shut up!"

58. PREVIOUS PROTEST/SIT-IN AT BOULDER HS! READ THIS!!
Boulder: Students protest censored yearbook photo

After a photograph of two girls kissing was pulled from the Boulder High School yearbook, students staged a same-sex “kiss-in” in protest. Student Worker, an activist student group, and Boulder High’s Gay-Straight Alliance organized the protest.

A statement from Student Worker said the protest would “demonstrate solidarity, from both heterosexual and homosexual students, with kids who must endure unfair treatment and policies because of their sexual orientation or perceived sexual orientation.” A Boulder High senior added, “It’s really a protest about homophobia in the system and in the schools themselves.”

According to the yearbook adviser, “The decision was made out of consideration for the kids and their families.” She had asked the student photographer to clear publishing the photo with both girls’ parents. The advisor feared that the parents might not have known about their daughters’ sexual orientation. When she did not hear from the parents, the photo was pulled from the yearbook.

Some students claimed the yearbook advisor was guilty of a double standard because photos of heterosexual couples kissing did not require parental approval. The mother of one of the girls called the decision not to publish the photo “very hypocritical.” One of the girls pictured agreed, “I didn’t like it because the other people did not have to get parent confirmation and I did.”

About 150 students gathered in support of the dozen kiss-in participants. Gay, lesbian, bisexual, and straight students were encouraged to kiss one another during the hour-long protest. Students from other schools participated as well.

73. A kiss-in. It doesn't get more peaceful than that
What a great idea. It should be taken nationally. Something must be done to combat homophobia. When people object to a kiss, they expose themselves as the emotionaly disturbed fear mongers they are.

These kids are amazing. I was in Boulder over the summer and fell in love with it. It is a spectacular place to see, but the people there upstage the scenery.

Best to all in Boulder,
G

65. you kids rule!!! Fucking awesome!!! Hope for the future!!!
...in the meantime, a few weeknds ago, I went to a Homecoming Dance where my spouse (high school teacher) was chaperoning...was sitting there against the wall watching the beautiful young people dancing, laughing, joking, talking, and thinking to myself "how many will be in Iraq, Iran or some other country fighting in the US military and, possibly, dying ...for oil in the next year or two or three?"

I almost got sick to my stomach ....and just sat there hoping and praying for a Kerry win to save America's young people from the Bush Blood Sucking Machine...

72. Good on 'em
What's the general make-up of their area politically?

i.e. are their parents proud or pissed?

Good on em if proud; Double good on em if they pissed of their republican parents

74. Boulder is pretty liberal
I'm sure the majority of their parents are proud of what their kids did.

I just want to add kudos to the school administrators who had the guts not to freak out and realized that protest is an American tradition, and strengthens rather than weakens our nation.

"President Bush and other administration officials have repeatedly said they have no plans to reinstate a draft,"

Bullshit!!! :puke:

OK... He didn't lie...they were on Rumsfeld's desk.
