27 million fall victim to identity theft

WASHINGTON -- More than 27 million people have been victims of identity theft in the last five years, the Federal Trade Commission said today.

The FTC released a survey showing that in the last year alone, 9.9 million people were victims of identity theft, costing them $5 billion and businesses and financial institutions almost $48 billion.

"For several years we have been seeing anecdotal evidence that identity theft is a significant problem that is on the rise," said Howard Beales, director of consumer protection for the FTC. "Now we know. It is affecting millions of consumers and costing billions of dollars."

5. Outsourcing Resumes

Worked for a company that put submitted resume info into a database for a Fortune 500 company. The resume's came in from high school drop outs that were looking for janitorial work to CEO's & CFO's of big companies. Name, home address, schools attended, jobs held, phone, fax, references and even SS#. They started outsourcing them to India in early 2000.
