Condoleezza Rice mulls change of role
Times
By Elaine Monaghan and Roland Watson
President Bush may make several changes to what has been a stable Cabinet

PRESIDENT BUSH is considering a Cabinet reshuffle that would deprive him of his best White House buddy but would inject fresh blood into his second-term team.

Condoleezza Rice, as avid a sports fan as the President as well as his National Security Adviser and constant sidekick, is expected to leave the White House. She will not necessarily depart the Administration, however. Ms Rice, whose dream job would be (American) Football Commissioner, let it be known 18 months ago that she was looking forward to returning to academia in California after a gruelling first term. But she might be persuaded to stay in Washington. One job she is said to fancy is Secretary of Defence at the Pentagon, if Mr Bush decides to relieve Donald Rumsfeld. Mr Rumsfeld is keen to extend his tenure and wants time to finish the “rationalisation” of the Armed Forces, the project he began four years and two wars ago to drag the US military into the 21st century.

The biggest decision facing Mr Bush is what to do with General Colin Powell at the State Department, the member of his national security team who is most often out of step with colleagues.

General Powell’s friends repeatedly raised the prospect of his departure during the first term, seemingly to frighten the White House into taking his counsel more seriously. Losing General Powell in the run-up to the Iraq war, for instance, would have sparked a real crisis for the Administration.

3. Yes she is as relevant as a typewriter repairman
She is trained as a "Sovietologist" and if you haven't noticed (they don't seem to) there aren't any Soviets around anymore.

Totally irrelevant and it showed on 9/11.

14. she should be teaching Russian history somewhere and hope
she doesn't screw that up. She's way over her head, can't handle crisis at all, screwed up NSA, can't make decisions, etc. But she reads newspapers for Shrub very well, therefore, make her Defense Secretary. Can she be much worse than Rummie?

22. Talk about falling upwards
I mean, is there anything you can do to get fired in this administration?

Condi is an INCOMPETENT TWIT. This is a woman who was caught asleep at the wheel, and neglecting her responsibilities. This is a public official who read an urgent intelligence report entitled "Bin Laden Determined to Strike inside the United States" short before 9/11 and dismissed it as "historical documents." This is a public official who has been wrong time and time again about everything she's done.

In all instances, this lady (just like Rumsfeld) has been a major f*ckup, and should have been fired from her job long ago.

Instead, now she's getting promoted. This is a disgrace!

I'm sure the relatives of 9/11 victims will be thrilled about this prospect.

I'd LOVE to watch hearings into Ms. Rice's confirmation

10. And another thing. Republicans will NOT confirm her as Sec Def.
Lugar? Hagel? McCain? They may be on the wrong side, but all have called Iraq an act of great incompetence. This kind of story is floated to make Condi's leaving seem more like her choice.

Several Republicans said that they were keeping low and wouldn't help Kerry BUT they don't have to worry about the election anymore.

25. They might even bring up her failures before
9-11, or would that be unpatriotic? She is the epitome of The Great American Failure Story. I do notice that she isn't mentioning her false doctorate nearly as much. Reality creeping up on her?

12. She should be ashamed of herself, campaigning for Bush.
I guess her job security was more important then our nations security. Why she wasn't called to the carpet for campaining still continues to puzzle me.

if they chose a woman to be SecDef. Can you just IMAGINE if dems had (remember them?- opposition party in the former US two-party system) dared to do that?
