Security tightened for inaugural
By The Washington Post

HASH(0x220a534)

Sunday, November 07, 2004

WASHINGTON — Unprecedented security will frame President Bush's second inauguration, with officials planning to use thousands of police from across the country, new screening technology for inaugural guests and a military contingent that could include a combat brigade of up to 4,000 troops.

Security is always tight on Inauguration Day, but it will be magnified for the first inauguration since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. Law enforcement officials have been preparing for months to protect U.S. and world leaders and citizens who attend.

Organizers are planning a traditional inauguration, capped with a parade down Pennsylvania Avenue and the usual evening balls. Bush has yet to name his inauguration committee, which will oversee planning of the pageantry and festivities, but law enforcement agencies are in high gear.

As tens of thousands of people come to Washington to watch the Jan. 20 swearing in, the city will be filled with military personnel, FBI agents in full SWAT outfitting, snipers on rooftops and scores of bomb-detecting dogs. The region's air defenses have been strengthened to prevent intruder aircraft, and sensors will be deployed throughout the area to detect biological, chemical or radiological material.

About 2,000 out-of-town officers will help with security and traffic details. Undercover officers will work the crowds, and D.C. police officers will be posted every 6 to 8 feet along the parade route.

8. And organize instead elsewhere?
Or many places? How would they feel with a million in DC, a million in NYC, a million in San Francisco and a million in Seattle? I'd personally like to see a million gather in Sante Fe, Austin, Denver or KC--get every Dem in Kansas, Nebraska, Colorado, Wyoming, New Mexico, Texas, Utah, and the Dakotas (if there are any Dems in the Dakotas) to gather in one place in the middle of the country.

Well, I can dream, can't I?

20. That would be beautiful!

Every Kerry Voter Across the country march on that day, at the same time as the swearing in . Each carrying a sign that has a ballot with a "?" in the center.

Anyone that didn't vote, can still be included but they need to carry a Truth sign that says.... Bush has No Mandate, Bush is not my President.

But if you voted, you must VISUAL Vote again that day.

We must let America and the World see what these Nazis have done to our country.

55. NO DIFFERENCE THAN 2001 CORONATION
I went from CT....joined a caravan of 19 buses leaving Union Square in NYC....to protest the last inauguaration. There were more police/military than civilians. (More protestors than supporters).
I witnessed shoulder to shoulder police in rows on both sides of the street AND a row behind the crowds at the barriers. Looked down the street at a large building with flags all along the front of it --- thought the entire intimidating police presence was such a disaster for America back then. Looking up I noticed EVERY building had sniper-types with automatic rifles on every rooftop and corner.
Washington DC.....our Capital was an armed camp back in 2000. bush and cheney never came out of their vehicle and walked the route like Clinton and Gore had done 4 years ago.
I've always wondered what they knew that turned the Capital into such an armed camp back then.

Only those willing to swear an oath of loyalty will be allowed to attend.

It's interesting that fundamentalists who think it's perfectly fine to blow up an abortion clinic will be passed through lines designed to detect Muslims intent on blowing up Americans.

11. Nobody go to DC -- go to an alternative Inauguration even in another
city.

Do nothing disruptive -- don't give the bush gang a reason to murder anyone. Act as if everyone is going to a funeral of someone of great respect and knowledge as died -- someone that all liberals and progressives and democrats respect and admire -- except that this "person" is named democracy.

Something along the lines I posted last night.

The mood must be sober -- and big enough so that the media will cover the alternative Inauguration event.

16. Imagine the eulogies!
The democrats/liberals/progressives -- free thinkers have so many great orators --

Because if there isn't a resolution to the fraud -- and since the bush crime family owns the courts -- Federal level -- the inauguration will proceed.

So this will be a funeral -- we need to come together to grieve -- perhaps have a wake -- we could respect all the cultural rites in the US.

They are expecting our side to be violent -- and their power is greater than ours -- violence is a waste of good people -- we are going to need all of our people for the future.

15. But I thought they had a mandate.
Jesus Christ! Nobody wants to see Cheney as the official POTUS even if he already is. And in the really unlikely event something could take them both out, then we'll finally win Falugia. I'm just saying that a fictional outcome might bring greater understanding along with overdue retribution.

This is not a threat. It's only an alternative hope as they deny their "mandate."

So, I'm wondering if marriage events will require similar security?

Or is Rover's crack team of Goebbelists planning camera angles that will only show bu$hler and the adoring throngs while the SSoldiers are excluded from the shots?

My own guess is that we will hear not one word about the armed camp that DC will become on Coronation Day. The Media Borg will simply not show it, therefore it will not exist.

Are there any more reasons to kill your TV?

....
The Secret Service is the lead agency for the inauguration because the ceremony
and celebrations are considered a National Special Security Event, a designation
that brings with it heightened federal planning and resources.

International ANSWER, the antiwar, anti-racism coalition that has sponsored some
of Washington's biggest demonstrations against the war in Iraq, has been planning
a counter-inauguration rally for months.

The company's security consulting business connects former special
forces troops with jobs that may involve protecting people or places. http://blackwatersecurity.com

During a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Tuesday, Blackwater founder and
president Gary Jackson says the company plans to have 400 employees
in northeastern North Carolina.

Governor Easley says having the global security company headquartered
in North Carolina is fitting for what he called the most military-friendly state
in the country. The company's headquarters and training ranges are in
Currituck County.

50. DOGS OF WAR
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=125&topic_id=9558&mesg_id=9558

My brothers in arms

These mist covered mountains
Are a home now for me
But my home is the lowlands
And always will be
Some day you’ll return to
Your valleys and your farms
And you’ll no longer burn
To be brothers in arms

Through these fields of destruction
Baptisms of fire
I’ve watched all your suffering
As the battles raged higher
And though they did hurt me so bad
In the fear and alarm
You did not desert me
My brothers in arms

There’s so many different worlds
So many differents suns
And we have just one world
But we live in different ones

Now the sun’s gone to hell
And the moon’s riding high
Let me bid you farewell
Every man has to die
But it’s written in the starlight
And every line on your palm
We’re fools to make war
On our brothers in arms

--Dire Straits

58. UNBELIEVABLE!!!!
I have been listening to that album nonstop since Tuesday - and the lyrics to THIS EXACT SONG were beginning to play just as I scrolled down to read your post! UN-FRICKIN'-BELIEVABLE!!!

Amazing that a 19-year-old album still holds such relevance today, but the theme of many of the songs is, sadly, timeless.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Dire Straits - Ride Across The River

I'm a soldier of freedom in the army of man,
We are the chosen, we're the partisan.
The cause it is noble and the cause it is just,
We are ready to pay with our lives if we must.

Gonna ride across the river deep and wide,
Ride across the river to the other side.

I'm a soldier of fortune, I'm a dog of war,
And we don't give a damn who the killing is for.
It's the same old story with a different name,
Death or glory, it's the killing game.

Gonna ride across the river deep and wide,
Ride across the river to the other side.

Nothing gonna stop them as the day follows the night,
Right becomes wrong, the left becomes the right.
And they sing as they march with their flags unfurled,
Today in the mountains, tomorrow the world.

Gonna ride across the river deep and wide,
Ride across the river to the other side.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Dire Straits - The Man's Too Strong

I'm just an ageing drummer boy
And in the wars I used to play
And I've called the tune
To many a torture session
Now they say I am a war criminal
And I'm fading away
Father please hear my confession

I have legalised robbery
Called it belief
I have run with the money
And hid like a thief

I have re-written history
With my armies and my crooks
Invented memories
I did burn all the books
And I can still hear his laughter
And I can still hear his song
The man's too big
The man's too strong

Well I have tried to be meek
And I have tried to be mild
But I spat like a woman
And sulked like a child
I have lived behind walls
That have made me alone
Striven for peace
Which I never have known
And I can still hear his laughter
And I can still hear his song
The man's too big
The man's too strong

Well the sun rose on the courtyard
And they all did hear him say
"You always were a Judas
But I got you anyway
You may have got your silver
But I swear upon my life
Your sister gave me diamonds
And I gave them to your wife"
Oh Father please help me
For I have done wrong
The man's too big
The man's too strong

54. North Carolina, "the most military-friendly state in the country"
Well, there you have it. Now we know why NC's results went from a minus 4 in exit polls to minus 13 in the vote tally. God forbid that NC look like anything but a salivating dog at bush's feet.

I lived there at one time. It's a beautiful state with wonderful people all over it, and they are being played.

We'll have either Jeb or the Asshole will do the Lurleen Wallace thing and Pickles will be President. Of course, the Asshole will still be there calling the shots, just like his idol George Wallace...

44. I wrote the Palm Beach Post..
Regarding the inaugural, I must say that the excessive military presence (4000 COMBAT troops) tends to confirm previous statements made by Mr. Bush. You know the ones. He has commented, at least THREE times on the record, that it would be easier if he were a dictator, and this sounds like more a dictator's installation.

Will there be missiles on parade too? Tanks? Loyalty oaths? Is he afraid that the people who were Diebolded out of their votes might show up to re-cast those votes in person?

The little cowboy need not be afraid...As much as over half of the nation and most of the world, despises him, we do not want to harm him. All we wanted was for him to stop hurting our country, and just go back to the ranch. Barring a meteor hitting DC on Jan 20, we have been sentenced for another four years.

We are halfway through our 8yr sentence, and we are a patient nation. There will be justice for him someday. Hopefully I will live long enough to see it.

57. Bingo! We have a winner!
If he is even IN the parade I will be shocked.

That man is terrified of Americans. Hates 'em.

He will only be in a ballroom in DC with about 2,000 extremely wealthy donors--and that's it.

Then he will go home and go to bed early.

I havent skimmed enough to know if this in in another thread and I am enough of a newbie to not be able to start one. Wouldnt an international Peace Rally/War protest annoy the crap out of them? Muck with the beauty of his "mandate"?

in the US and have Democracy/Freedom Balls at them. Dance anyway you please. Heck, you could even dance with a protest sign (at least you won't get your toes stepped on).

59. GENERAL STRIKE ON JANUARY 20- DO NOT GO TO WORK THAT DAY
or buy anything. March if you can. Flags upside down on every street in the USA! Even if the media doesn't cover it, your neighbors will know...keep your kids home from school too.

and I will spread the word.

I don't even own an American flag but this is a good excuse to buy one.

81. Easy to do by calling in sick since it is early in the year
Assuming you actually have a job. Everyone will still have sick days to use. Sick-out - General Strike on January 20. Fly the flag upside down. Go drive really slow on the interstates. Everyone flush their toilet when he places his hand on the bible. It will drain all the water systems. Everyone pull in a gas station and sit there at inauguration time until it is over. Put your hood up like you have car trouble. Tie up all the gas stations during the inaugural. Lots of things like this we could do.

somewhere else, e.g. Boston.

Even if it's just symbolic.

To inaugurate Gore or Kerry as the real president.

73. tin-foil hat thought
hats on... :tinfoilhat:

What if the Neocons are setting up to have Bush offed and blame it on liberal terrorists? If Bush were killed (the term "assassinate" is too good for him), the Right would turn him into their own JFK, the Neocons would be able to assume dictatorial powers (if the President wasn't safe from the terrorists, who is? Please protect us Mr. Neocon!), and they would be able to "crack down" on the evil liberal terrorists, who were distraught over Bush winning re-election (hell, one of them just killed himself because of it!).

He no longer serves any purpose for them: his job was to get elected and then re-elected (or at least soften the appearance of a coup). He's done that. They don't need to worry about hiding behind the aw-shucks, since they'll be able to justify assuming dictatorial powers by invoking the killing of the President--a situation even more extreme than 9/11 that requires an even more extreme response.

Having tons of security is perfectly understandable for the first innauguration following 9/11, yet it's also the perfect cover: if the terrorists can get through all of that security, they can get through anything!

hats off...

78. I declare the Capitol the "Black Zone"
Black for death.
Black for black box voting.
Black for mourning.
Black for the ascence of light leaving D.C.

Bush can't walk the streets. Name one other American President who couldn't walk the streets of even a small city without fear.

Even Castro can walk through the streets.
