North Carolina E. coli outbreak grows
http://edition.cnn.com/2004/HEALTH/11/07/e.coli.outbreak.ap/

RALEIGH, North Carolina (AP) -- An outbreak of E. coli infections linked to last month's state fair may be larger than previously thought, with more than 100 additional cases under review, according to health officials.

The number of confirmed infections grew to 31 by Saturday, and the state Department of Health and Human Services was investigating 103 more cases.

Department spokesman Bill Furney attributed the additional reports to heightened awareness among doctors and the public. "We're in a state where we are looking for it," he said.

The most common link among victims is that some visited a petting zoo at the fair. Many children were infected, including three who developed a serious complication that can cause kidney failure.

6. Tough noogies (sarcasm on)
After all the publicity in our blue state with the E.coli scare, and I know it's been at least 10 years, the word has been publicized for years to wash your hands, wash your hands, wash your hands, after touching any animals.

So that Red State folks haven't gotten it yet. Too bad. If they weren't smart enough to figure out when a shill was screwing them, then I wouldn't give them the brains to figure out how to prevent E.coli!

12. This is EXACTLY what 'less government' means.
There's going to be more and more and more of this stuff, not only in venues like petting zoos, but outbreaks in food poisoning are going to skyrocket.

15. My heart goes out to them for 5, 4, 3, 2 ...
... nope, can't even summon five seconds of pity now. They'll have to settle for four, and those are reserved for Kerry voters.

16. Hey lighten up on NC, guys
I've got a friend down there that went to bed on Tuesday night and thought Kerry was gonna be her president. Said that it looked close. She was as happy as I've ever heard her.
I think the people of NC were robbed. Just like the rest of us.

19. We need more such posts
It was 56-43 in NC, and Kerry was probably screwed out of more than a few votes. So let's not shit on 45% or so of Tar Heel Nation.
