Specter: No conflict exists

Senate records show Arlen Specter (R., Pa.) has been the busiest stock trader among the four U.S. senators in Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

The senator, reelected last week with 53 percent of the vote, said in an interview before the election that he saw no conflict between his wallet and his conscience.

Specter is not the wealthiest local senator. Jon Corzine (D., N.J.) and Frank Lautenberg (D., N.J.) made fortunes in private business; each holds hedge-fund, mutual-fund and bond portfolios worth many millions.

But, unlike Specter, their investments are held in blind trusts over which they have no day-to-day control. And Sen. Rick Santorum (R., Pa.) holds mutual funds, bonds and real estate, but not individual stocks, according to his Senate filings.
