Extremists Moving Across Iran-Iraq Border
ANKARA, Turkey - Islamic extremists have been moving supplies and new recruits from Iran into Iraq, say Iraqi Kurdish and Western officials, though it's unclear whether Tehran is covertly backing them or whether militants are simply taking advantage of the porous border.

Iranian involvement with extremist groups in the Iraqi insurgency would be potentially explosive, especially given the history of U.S.-Iranian animosity. Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld said recently Iran was engaged in "a lot of meddling" in Iraq but gave no details.

The U.S. government report on the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks also pointed to contacts between Iranian security officials and senior al-Qaida figures and found evidence that eight to 10 of the Sept. 11 hijackers passed through Iranian territory. There was, however, no evidence the Iranians knew that the hijackers were planning to attack the World Trade Center.

I keep wavering on which is first, Iran or Syria. Today my money is on Iran.

bush's doctrine.

2. I would say neither...
We haven't taken either one to the security council and disarmed them yet, so an invasion is highly unlikely.

13. Security council? Is that still relevent?
I think bush has made it very clear that he does not intend to go about his wars by legal means.

6. This has the potential for a military tragedy
Iran has a unique opportunity with Fallujah. We have 40,000+ troops gathered around 1 city. If Iran wanted to hurt the U.S. Military, now is their chance. I dread to think of this possibility, but it's there, and we are setting ourselves up bigtime. A few well-placed gas/bio attacks and we have a real problem which will lead to a draft, military escalation and involvement of other third parties.

12. Or impeachment of everyone in washington.

Seriously tho, I think you are absolutely right. I wonder what the density of troops dispersement around Fallujah is right now. I don't think even chem/bio would be necessary. A good mortar barrage by diversely separated teams, moving constantly with a three round barrage each time would do serious damage to our troops.

Will someone please explain just how we got in a situation like this? We are supposed to be a nation of peacelovers. I guess that was just propoganda.

18. Chem/Bio Not Needed
The Iranians have missiles with standard high explosives warheads, and all they have to do is to rain missiles down on the US positions.

Shoot a few into the Green Zone and take out local Command and Control, the Baghdad airport, and the US supply base, Camp Anaconda.

But the Iranians won't start it, they already know that the US is planning to launch an attack on them. Let the US be seen by the world as the agressor, and I'll bet that the coalition starts to vanish.

17. Syriasly, that's a Laosy thing to say
So many enemies, so little army.

I still think they'll pop Syria first, especially since they've got the IDF just itching to help, and they're otherwise short on troops.

Fighting Iran is an entirely different matter, regardless of that PNAC quote saying that "everybody wants to go to Baghdad; real men want to go to Tehran." Iran has a long history of being fucked with by the United States, it's got three times the population of Iraq, and it's military is in much better shape than Saddam's was. (Admittedly, that last bit's not much of a statement, but it should give one pause.)

Man, do we suck, and man have we gotten ourselves into a huge honkin' mess without realizing it even yet. We just closed the Embassy in Syria, by the way, and there have been many disturbing rumblings about mortar fire coming from there, border skirmishes and the like.

Now that Junior thinks he's invincible, who knows what to expect.

16. Interestingly enough, China and Iran
just recently (Oct. 30) announced a multi-year, multi-billion dollar deal for Iran to supply China with oil

http://news.xinhuanet.com/english/2004-10/30/content_2157826.htm

and earlier this year inked a $20 billion deal to supply China with natural gas...

http://www.china.org.cn/english/2004/Mar/90822.htm

What a coincidence...

I wonder how China will look at a U.S. attack on their new friend...Knowing bushco, it's likely we will find out...
