In Second Term, President Looks Toward Legacy (Ohio Toledo Blade)
In second term, President looks toward legacy
Aides: Ambitious agenda aims to lift Bush to top tier of leaders

By ANN McFEATTERS
BLADE WASHINGTON BUREAU CHIEF

WASHINGTON - Now that President Bush has won a second term, it's all about legacy.
Former President Bill Clinton once mourned that he had never had the opportunity to go down in the pantheon of "great presidents" because, he said, he had no immense crisis such as a war or an economic catastrophe over which to preside.

Mr. Bush already has made his mark in history for surviving the Florida recount crisis, the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the war in Iraq, the national angst over joblessness, and intense targeting by the entire Democratic Party. He now, aides say, is eager to turn to making a difference that will put him in the top tier of presidents.

At his press conference Thursday, he left no doubt that he wants to become the "reform president," tackling some of the most controversial issues confronting the nation, including changing the way Social Security works, establishing more medical savings accounts, rewriting the tax code, making major changes in the way intelligence is gathered and used, and reducing the burgeoning $422 billion budget deficit this year by improving economic growth while cutting popular but expensive social programs.

But even Republicans now are murmuring that there is not enough money to let younger workers pull money out of Social Security to invest in private accounts. And the powerful AARP says it is set to block any major changes.

(I was wondering about this last night, in thinking about why he'd 'reach out' to democrats. I wondered if it was because he wanted all Americans to love him, so he goes down in history as great.)

13. It is up to us to make sure his true legacy is EXPOSED
We cannot tolerate future generations to be taught that he was a saint -- like saint Raygun.

He is a pathological liar -- he stole 3 elections (that includes the 2002 election with the assassination of Wellstone and the political assassination of Cleland.)

We really need to start planning an alternative bushie library -- with one whole room filled with the photographs of death troops, injured troops and the ruin that he brought to the Iraqis -- all the dead and injured people of Iraq -- there are thousands of photos on websites -- these should have a home in an alternative library.

Job losses -- with a photo and video exhibits.

I think that if we can't be successful in stopping his coronation in January -- that we should keep working to get all computer voting machines tossed out AND at the same time find a committee willing to do the hard work to create an alternative library so that every time the bushie's record is whitewashed -- the alternative (TRUTH) can come out.

He said the exact same shit in 2000. Almost word for word. He must be laughing to himself that the media is actually buying it.

10. I know, but,
I just got to thinking, what reason does he have to do it now? Why bother saying he wants to include democrats?

As we've seen, steamrolling over everyone is more his style - and that was when he had re-election to worry about.

As far as I know (via AAR and DU - I don't watch TV news now), he's done it twice. The first time was the concession speech, the second in his radio address.

That "I have the will of the people behind me - a mandate - so you reporters must follow my one-question rule" press conference was more in line with what I expected.

4. Isn't some asswipe doing an anti-Clinton library?
The potential for an anti-Bush library is staggering. Especially considering that his 'library' will consist of about 2 books. 'The Holy Babble' and 'My Pet Goat'.

8. What "legacy" are you talking about Chimpy?
The deaths of over 1,000 or our men and women, not to mention 100,000 or so Iraqis?

Or is your "legacy" going to be bankrupting the country?

9. If the AARP is serious
then I think I'll join.
It really pisses me off as a 55 year old. I won't have time to build any investment of any worth in ten years, and to top that off, I may not see any social security or a reduced payment. Guess I'll just never retire....hope I keep my health.

35. Don't write out that check to AARP just yet...
Remember how they rolled over for booshCo on the recent drug bill...
We believe the AARPs huge insurance business helps explain why it has endorsed a bill that threatens the future of Medicare and the health of Americaís seniors. Under the proposed Medicare legislation the AARP would almost surely reap hundreds of millions of dollars in additional insurance revenues over the next decade. The Medicare bill would pump $400 billion in Federal Government money into new Medigap drug policies over the next decade. At present, the AARPís profit from its huge insurance sales amounts to 3.9% of the insurance premiums it collects. If AARPís partners were to capture even 10% of the new Medicare prescription drug coverage market, their premiums would amount $40 billion, and the AARPs profits would be $1.56 billion.

The Medicare prescription drug bill offers huge payoffs to the drug industry, private insurers, and some large employers. It would provide paltry benefits to Medicare recipients and take a giant step toward privatizing Medicare. In effect, the AARP leadership has shamefully agreed to sell out its members in exchange for the organizationís financial gain.

14. Eliminating Social Programs
He's already tried to eliminate programs like Section 8 Housing, etc.

He'll come up with idiotic names like "Safe Home Program" and cut all funding for housing.

His budget balancing will be disastrous because it will give him an excuse to destroy the existing safety net.

15. Why does he care about legacy anyway?
A good Christian should only care about the salvation of his soul. Legacy will mean nothing after the rapture, which is supposed to be coming soon. What will his religious supporters think, when they find out that his mind is focused on secular matters like his prideful legacy?

21. Says "ANN McFEATTERS BLADE WASHINGTON BUREAU CHIEF"
And at the bottom,

<<Contact Ann McFeatters at: amcfeatters@nationalpress.com or 202-662-7071.>>

I posted this because I thought people might want to know what Bush is or may be up to.... (Mods, if this is not considered a good resource, or if you think it isn't in the news category, please let me know.)

I was also wondering, as in my posts above, if maybe there was a reason * is still mentioning including the democrats, when it's not necessary this time around (no re-selection to worry about).

".. and reducing the burgeoning $422 billion budget deficit this year..."

Why the hell should that make him a top tier president? It was him who created the damn deficit - it's not like he took over the deficit & turned it into a record surplus, like the last legal president did.

And may God have mercy on the poor and war-burdened, and help us to end their suffering.

40. Bush's legacy will be...
...the Orwellian nature of his regime. I've restrained from calling his presidency a regime, but at some point, one has to wake up and see things for what they are. His is a regime, pure and simple. I see 5 things making up the Bush Legacy:
1. The War in Iraq
2. The War on Terror
3. Ignoring Stem Cell research.
4. The 2000 election
5. The deficit he'll leave us with in 4 years.
