NYT: G.O.P. Plans to Give Environment Rules a Free-Market Tilt
Be watching for more and more public lands to disappear from the nation's treasure chest as private corporate interest are put first. Thank your Republican reps for this.

WASHINGTON, Nov. 7 - With the elections over, Congress and the Bush administration are moving ahead with ambitious environmental agendas that include revamping signature laws on air pollution and endangered species and reviving a moribund energy bill that would open the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to energy exploration.

In addition, the administration intends to accelerate conservation efforts by distributing billions of dollars to private landowners for the preservation of wetlands and wildlife habitats. The White House also plans to announce next month a new effort to clean up the Great Lakes.

1. You see, if the lake and rivers in your state are full of mercury . . .
Not to worry! An exciting new pollution trading system will clean up mercury in lakes and rivers in another state (someday), by allowing utilities in your area to trade pollution credits! Isn't that exciting and innovative?

True, you still won't actually be able to eat the fish you catch in the lakes and rivers where you live, but someday, you might be able to travel to states where lower methyl mercury levels in fish would allow you to occasionally eat them - if they're still around, of course . . .

It's exciting! It's innovative! It's environmental market magic!!

3. one of the big supporters of Harry Reid in Nevada, Newmont Gold Company
is building a huge coal fired power plant near Elko, Nevada. In fact, Nevada is on line right now for construction of FOUR NEW COAL FIRED PLANTS and no one is protesting but a small group of Western Shoshones and Citizens Alert. Mercury ends up in the systems of kids who live in the air sheds of these things and NO ONE including powerful Harry Reid is doing anything about it!!!
