Rumsfeld to hold news conference

US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld scheduled a news conference today as US forces in Iraq launched a massive bombardment of the insurgent stronghold of Fallujah.

Mr Rumsfeld and General Richard Myers, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, were to brief Pentagon reporters at 2pm (6am Tuesday AEDT), a Pentagon spokesman said.

The briefing - Mr Rumsfeld's first Pentagon press conference in two months - came as US artillery, warplanes and tanks pounded Fallujah to pave the way for a major US assault.

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS.MW) -- Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said Monday that the successful military assault of the city of Fallujah west of Baghdad in Iraq will "deal a blow to terrorists in the country." In an afternoon press briefing, Rumsfeld also said that the president had not raised with him the subject of his possible departure from the top post at the Pentagon, where he has been pushing for policy and operational reform throughout his term. "That's not a subject that's come up," he said.
