PM told to shed 'poodle' tag in Washington
Independent
By Andrew Grice
08 November 2004

Tony Blair came under pressure yesterday to dispel his image as President George Bush's "poodle" by winning real concessions when they meet in Washington later this week.

The Prime Minister will cement his position as the American President's closest overseas ally by being the first foreign leader to visit him since his re-election last week. But Mr Blair's critics warned that a symbolic visit would not be enough and urged him to press the Bush administration to change its stance on the Middle East and climate change.

Mr Blair received a boost when former president George Bush Snr hinted that his son would bow to pressure to move faster on the Middle East peace process in his second term. He said there was a "real opportunity" to make progress and suggested that the replacement of Yasser Arafat, who is seriously ill, might help the process.

He told the BBC's Breakfast with Frost programme: "There is an opportunity and I think Tony Blair was heard loud and clear in Washington about what he was calling for. Blair is 100 per cent correct. And I think he will find the President a willing and able partner, particularly if there is a change in leadership in the PLO that we can deal with more openly and more confidence."

2. The only concession the poodle is likely to get is a choice of which
cheek of bush's ass he gets to kiss this time.

3. Bummer about blair
I wish he was as eager to cement his relationship with his own
people, the people of europe and the ameircan people that are
closer to his party's views.

Blair, you are not creating a bridge to the american people, you
are creating a destructive alliance with some of the ugliest
most antidemcratic militarists on earth. That you've been out
informing us to accept bush's election shows how totally clueless
you are.... the election was a fraud.... and you're an idiot
doing a neville chamberlain.

Just don't come back across the pond and tell us of peace in our
time.

4. What does Blair have in common with an enema bag?
They BOTH have their snouts up Chimpy's ass...

He will NEVER be anything more than "Bush's Poodle".

Yeah, I think the Brits deserve him, too.

What's the matter, Tommy, can't vote YOUR buggerer out either?

7. I see a potentially awkward moment developing…..
Will poodle be pressured to finally picking up his Congressional Gold Medal and if so, will it be a public event, say in the Rose Garden, or will it be slipped into his back pocket? I’m sure the English tabloids will be watching closely. Might be hard to shed that poodle image when accepting his dog tags….

9. Already got that ribbon….waiting for tags….

Later that same day, the American Kennel Club, the oldest and most distinguished of the U.S. organizations devoted to the development of pure breeds, awarded him its coveted "Best in Show" prize. However, according to handler and trainer Douglas P. Ramsbottom OBE the AKC triumph was a close-run thing. "The damn fools had him down as a poodle. Absolutely ridiculous. He's British for Godssake, not some kind of Frenchy what-have-you. Henry V didn't massacre several thousand French prisoners at Agincourt in order to have some bloody colonial clot call the leader of Her Majesty's Government a frog dog."

Mr. Ramsbottom did acknowledge that the poodle canard has enjoyed widespread circulation on internet satire sites, such as those operated by the Daily Telegraph and Times of London, and that fixing Mr. Blair's exact breed has been a somewhat difficult process. "Not a foxhound, obviously. More of a lapdog, really. He reminds me most of a Corgi, but Buck House won't go for that. You'd think they owned the patent on the bloody things."

Ultimately, the AKC was persuaded to classify Mr. Blair as a "(House of) Common(s) Terrier", one of the less well-known of the toy breeds.
