Blackwell (Ohio) Basks in Election Spotlight

Ohio secretary of state adds success to resume for '06 run at governor

By Kymberli Hagelberg and Carl Chancellor

Beacon Journal staff writers

COLUMBUS - Possibly the only person as pleased as the president with the outcome of Tuesday's election in Ohio is Secretary of State J. Kenneth Blackwell.

As it became clear that the race for the presidency would come down to the Buckeye State, the cameras of the nation and the world focused on the state and on Blackwell, who had positioned himself for just such a moment.

In the last weeks leading up to the election, it was almost impossible for Ohioans to turn on the radio or television, pick up the mail or answer the telephone without hearing from Blackwell, Ohio's chief election official.

Blackwell, the former conservative Republican mayor of Cincinnati, who has designs on the governor's mansion, was in the eye of the political storm -- a storm largely created by him -- that swirled around Ohio as the election drew near.

Blackwell attempted to invoke an outdated rule requiring voter registration cards be printed on 80-pound paper.

Then he issued an order requiring voters to cast provisional ballots in the precinct where they live.

He was sued by Democrats, who said the order would hurt minorities.

36. Let's give him more attention: BLACK FAX!
Yeah, I've posted this before, but bears repeating in light of this latest puke-inducing news.

We can make our protest of this lump of santorum a little more meaningful by engaging in some Republican style dirty tricks.

Instead of e-mailing or sending letters of protest...send FAXES. As the last page of your fax, send a black piece of paper like construction paper, saying this represents the black (hoodie??) you'll be wearing...the black voters who've been disenfranchised...the black representing the death of our right to vote...till our voting system is no longer held hostage by machines. Not only is this color appropriate, but thousands of people sending a black page will DEVOUR fax toner, and this will cause major inconvenience for them. These faxes won't be so easily ignored!

PLEASE help with this protest!! Address your faxed letters of protest to:

J. Kenneth Blackwell
Ohio Secretary of State
Fax: (614) 544-0649

Thank you!

5. Akron Beacon Journal editorial: Blunders by Blackwell
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=103x83149

After being bombarded with criticisms and lawsuits, Ohio's top elections official had a good day on Election Day. Ohio did not become the next Florida. J. Kenneth Blackwell, the secretary of state and Republican candidate for governor in 2006, said he had few regrets over the way he handled things. Beware the spin. In truth, Blackwell dodged disaster, presiding over a voting system still in need of fundamental reform.

Blackwell was gracious enough to credit 50,000 poll workers across the state for the relatively problem-free balloting. Patient and determined voters, some waiting for as long as 10 hours in rainy weather, also deserve much credit. On balance, Blackwell deserves little. His confusing and sometimes contradictory directives were more hindrance than help.

By Wednesday morning, the size of the Bush win erased potential trouble spots, provisional ballots (given to voters who don't show up on registration lists) and punch-card ballots.

The president's margin of victory, about 136,000 votes, was less than the number of provisional ballots, still to be checked and counted, but not by enough to affect the outcome. About 97,000 punch-card ballots contained no vote for president, likely due to voter error, including incomplete punches.
.......snip........
The B-J does not quite have all the facts straight, but I like the sentiment.

Blackwell for this crap, and Householder due to a campaign finance scandal. That leaves Betty Montgomery and a few other 'pukes to slug it out in the colossal gop pre-primary slimefest. Watch them devour each other.

18. Because he did the dirty work for the Republicans..
.. so he will be rewarded with is own fixed elections and multi-million dollar smear campaigns on his behalf. The GOP, sadly, likes to lavish attention and money on any minority political figures that are right wing.. They screw the rest of the miniorities with their policies, but have a handful to use for props. It's disgusting! To think that this asshole handed the election to Bush.. and will now be rewarded.

Ohio never bought the EVMs from Diebold or any vendor. Only about 6 counties use EVMs.

28. He has a lot to be proud of.
The election went off very well. As the chief elections official, the buck stops at his desk. He gets credit when things go well, the blame when they don't. It went well, he gets credit. He will probably be the next republican nominee for governor, and will likely slug it out with Montgomery and Petro.

One machine in one county. I apologize if my being a realist offends you. Your implication that I am a freeper-type is offensive, and I ask you to remove it immediately. get over it, we lost. we need to start concentrating on winning back the congress in 2006.

38. The problem was only caught because of
people who called in and told them there can not be more votes for Bush than actual voters. The election officials didn't even know there was a problem. LOL. They had a little over 600 voters but they were not concerned more than 4,000 votes went to Bush. One machine per county?
How do you freaking know that only one machine had a "glitch"?
The machines do not give out receipts. If there was more voters in that precinct, the problem wouldn't have been caught.

33. Blackwell kept playing mind games w/ 80# paper forms & provisional ballots
He sure acted like he was trying to reduce the vote count by insisting on 80# card stock for registration forms and his imperial edicts on provisional ballots. He knew that the law was unclear on both and he was just finkucg with the Democrats.

Apparently, you know more about Blackwell than I do. Don't hesitate to share it with us.

34. I don't know a whole hell of a lot about him.
I know that his office came out smelling good on this one. everybody expected another florida, and it didn't happen. I know that the party machinery doesn't like him too much (a social aquaintance is the chair of the Hamilton county republican party). I know that all this publicity has helped him. I agree with him on provisional ballots, they should be filed in the correct precinct. Otherwise, the voter is disenfranchised from all the down-ballot initiatives, taxes levies, and minor races. the court of appeals got it right. the 80 pound card stock thing was retarded, but quickly forgotten. like it or not, we may very well see blackwell as the republican nominee for governor. this may help us, as he is really far right wing. Petro is much more moderate in his public statements. Montgomery doesn't have a chance. I still have no clue who's running for us. could fingerhut be eyeing the governor's office?

What does that tell you? As told to me by another Ohio political-type, Eric is a man who likes to run and rule things in politics, so I don't expect he will transition to the world of legal practice.

The Senate race and the entire executive branch is on the ballot in 2006. I expect Eric will be on the statewide ballot somewhere.
